Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
Star Fox Zero
Anyway, I'm pretty stoked about this new release as I understand it harkens back to Star Fox 64 which was incredible. Apparently if you buy the game on initial release you get some free game called Star Fox Guard - (is that Rob the Robot?). I don't know much about Guard, but I'll take it.
Two questions I can't figure out...is if this has a vs multiplayer mode or just the co-op thing? Also, will I be able to do a barrel roll this time?

(side topic - anyone play Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii U? Any good?

Metroid Prime is amazing. There are so many things about that game that are still jaw dropping. It's sad that developers didn't take more from it, but because of that it still feels singular. All three are equally great.

I'm not sure how well a rails game is received these days, but as a fan of old-school shooters (which are all basically rail games), I have absolutely no problem with it. I suppose being on rails it's easier to script the dialog between the characters. For me, that's part of the fun. Hearing your wing-men (and women) bantering with each other or Star Wolf, etc. adds to the experience, IMO.
CORRECTION! Some stages are open dog-fighting stages. Those you can fly anywhere. By and large consider it a rails game though.
Here's an example from 64 - the Katina stage (known as the Independance Day stage).

A pass for me unless it receives massively good reviews. I don't have especially fond memories of the series past the first one.

I've said before, but I prefer games that I can pick up and play in about the time it takes to drink an RC. I don't need to be mired in 40 hour epics. I can pick up F-Zero or Star Fox and play a stage or two, trying to best my old score/time, and be done having had a fine, white knuckle gaming experience in 20mins.
And look at that illustration for that Guard game. It looks like it was a pull-out poster for some long lost 1987 title. Love it!

If you have Gamefly, rent it and you can usually buy for $49 after a couple of weeks.

That video makes it look pretty.... generic.

But the gameplay is great too- lots of hidden depth, lots of great skill-based action. Secrets galore. It's not long, but it is made to be replayed.

Falco is no Wedge.

Falco is by far the deeper character (for a guy who doesn't appear to know much about SF, you know he's the wingman). He certainly has more dialogue in any given title than Wedge does across three flicks.
But nerds greater than us have already broken this down.

I'm more a twitch gamer. I like a good 2d fighter, shooter, platform, or racing game. Menu driven combat, long cut-scenes, or complicated controls are not what I'm looking for in a video game. Stopping flow to go back and forth between the screen and the pad doesn't excite me. Bummer too. Maybe I'll try it out later.
This weekend, instead of Star Fox Zero...I'm getting Star Fox 64 and F-Zero X through the Wii virtual console. It's been about a decade and a half since I've played them, but I know they'll get a lot of plays. Save me about $40 to boot!
