the special edition looks awesome, I'm a huge fan of monkey island and can't wait to get my hands on it.

This however looks like it is going to be a big disappointment. The art looks like crap and the preview gives the game a very "cheap" feel. Anything will be better than monkey island 4 though.

What's wrong with Monkey Island 4? I thought they were all good.

monkey combat
the move to 3D
the horrible interface
the stupid giant robot ending
starbuckaneers
MI4 was definitely the worst of the series.

At least it means that lucasarts understands that the Monkey Island Series deserve a continuation. It's too bad that point and click adventures are a dead genre. They just don't get sold enough. I think the release as an Xbox arcade live game and PC game (why the hell not the PSN?)is the way forward. If these adventure games don't come out costing too much in development than the revenues don't need to be so big as well.
I've played ALL Lucasarts Adventures and some Sierra and others as well. I would love to see another 2D Monkey Island Installment for Monkey Island 5. The Drawn style of MI3 was way better than the 3D for MI4 as well was the story.
Point and Click adventures seems to be abandonned by publishers and the amateurs have filled the gaps. If you wanna play some nice horror point and click adventures go looks for Yahtzee's (yes he's the one from zero punctuation) adventure games or other on the AGS website.

I think adventure games are as dead as boardgames are - most people ignore them but they're thriving if you just know where to look.
Adventure Company has put out a ton of games in the past few years - sure a lot of them aren't great but that's true of anything.
Telltale Games has had massive success with Sam and Max and Homestar Runner.
There's a few professional-quality indie stars - Jonathan Boakes (Dark Fall, The Lost Crown) comes to mind. And as you point out, the graphical adventure indie scene is quite vibrant. The text adventure indie scene is even more so, with several honest to goodness excellent games.
Sure, it's not the same as it was when LucasArts and Sierra were at their zenith. But it's also a long way from dead.
