Alright...cast your vote for the best Roguelike here...I've gotten interested them again after a long hiatus precipitated by supreme frustration with NetHack.

I'm playing a little Crawl here and there these days...seems pretty good, I like that there's a little more of an interface than usual. Still damn hard though.

I'm a bit concerned about the luck factor though...

I've always been partial to Ancient Domains of Mystery, even though it has a story and actual quests and such. :P

Dunno if it counts, but there's always the good ol' Castle of the Winds...

@ c

Nethack.

And read the damn spoilers. People say you ruin the fun if you do. But you really ruin the fun if you don't.

Ain't that the truth...one of the thing that's frustrating about Nethack is how opaque it is...I mean, part of the fun is discovery but when you've got a character that's actually lasted more than an hour it sucks to die because you just didn't know about something.

Haven't tried that DOOM one...looks fun.

I can't get into ADOM for some reason.

The one I've played the most is NetHack, but I've never finished the game. Then maybe Moria/Angband. I did play Rogue a lot as a kid, but now I like the more complex roguelikes better. ADOM is great but I never got much into it, although I want to play more.

Omega was one that I liked, but never understood very well, and TOME seems to be great, but I've played it very little...

Using a portable computer most of the time now makes it difficult to play roguelikes :)

I like DoomRL for a few reasons. #1, it's one of the few RLs where ranged combat is the rule and not the exception. #2, it has music! The full suite of Doom sound effects and BGM are present in the game -- it really immerses you in the game. ("BOOM" says the double-barrel shotgun.) #3, it expands on the Doom universe in new (but logical) ways. New equipment, new skills, etc. And #4, it's short for a RL. You can beat the game in as little as 90 minutes. So dying isn't quite the bitch that it is in Nethack.

Too bad DoomRL and the other games on its page don't work on the Mac...

BTW, I just saw Dwarf Fortress (a playable work in progresss with amazing features) and it does run on a Mac :)

Jesus, how long does it take to generate a world in Dwarf Fortress? It's been going for like 20 minutes!

Looks awesome though...

I played a crapload of ADOM a long time ago, never even came close to the endgame. I love the different classes & skills though.
Now I'm into Shiren the Wanderer on DS. Yeah, yeah, it's not ASCII, but it's as roguelike as they come.
I love the scope of Dwarf Fortress but the pain of learning it was too much to overcome.

the dwarf fortress concept is crying out for a usable GUI. the whole depth of the game blows my mind, but i just don't give enough of a shit to figure out how to play it in it's current state.

Yeah, once that Dwarf Fortress world finished building I picked around at it for about 30 minutes and absolutely no clue what I was doing. It looks really, really complex. It seems like a _great_ concept, but damn!

Gave ADOM another go...I'm starting to dig it...I am getting tired of that damn crazy farmer killing me in the first dungeon.

I've bought probably hundreds of RPGs over the years...and none of them offer the replayability and depth that Nethack and other Roguelikes do. Sure, they doesn't have extremely detailed (and hackneyed, rambling) storylines and no graphics at all, but the quality of gameplay is so high I don't even notice.

I was thinking the other day that DUNGEONQUEST is very much like a Roguelike board game.
