Looks like somebody is trying to bring back the adventure gamebook. You know, the choose your own adventure kind of deal (Fighting Fantasy, LoneWolf, Wizards Warriors & You, etc.)

Not keen on the art, or sure I'm up for something like this, but reading the 'about' section he seems to have his heart in the right place. Perhaps with the dawn of the Kindle and what-not interactive fiction can make a come back?

I still think those Dr Who adventures at

www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/42142/do...solitaire-story-game

are absolutely excellent. I spent hours chasing around various locales slapping daleks, cybermen and assorted unbelievables trying to take over Earth now/in future/in victorian times etc etc.

It was really immersive and super good dice rolling fun. Considering it is free, I recommend it to everyone....

I liked Fighting Fantasy and Choose Your Own Adventure best of all the different series. Although even both of those had some real stinkers. The D&D/Gamma World TSR books weren't very good for the most part. Lone Wolf was decent. I never got around to trying out the set of books where you were a ninja.

If it's your destiny... why do you have to quest for it?

This company is doing some fun stuff with multiple choice text adventures: http://www.choiceofgames.com/ . I have a bunch of the apps (got them free, dunno if they always are or not) and they are surprisingly engaging. If you are into the idea, check em out for sure.

I always wondered what happened to this concept...I thought it just died when people started making open-story video games. Guess not.

I always liked the Choose Your Own Adventure line when I was...maybe 9...good stuff.

Hey, I just found this thread so I thought I might resurrect it since it seemed appropriate. I'm a mostly lone developer who's been working on a PC/Mac version of DestinyQuest (that isn't region-locked!)

We're releasing the third and final act on September 14.
Here's the link . And here's a demo , and here's a pretty trailer:

I'll be around to talk about it more sometime.

I was looking at my choose your own adventure books the other day. I would rank them, from best to worst:

Middle Earth Quest
Fighting Fantasy
Wizards, Warriors, & You
Sagar the Barbarian
Choose Your Own Adventure
D&D Endless Adventures

I have the complete sets of the first 4 from when I was a kid (I checked the Wizards, Warriors, and You book with Dinosaurs in 2nd grade from the school library and then any money I came across went to these books for the next 3 or 4 years). I thought about selling them all, but now that we have a little dude I might keep them around to see if he is interested.

I was always a big fan of both the Fighting Fantasy series and the Lone Wolf series. I remember my first FF gamebook was Freeway Fighter. I think I have both series in pdf form, but it is not quite the same.

Interesting. What do you think made D&D Endless Adventures bad and Middle Earth Quest good?

They had the first three D&D Endless Adventures at the school library and I remember I wasn't crazy about them either. Probably because you didn't need paper, pencil and dice, so I considered them a more introductory type of adventure book, as were the Choose Your Own Adventure books.
