GALAGA is still a great game, and it's really more the model from the modern shoot 'em up than SPACE INVADERS was- enemies flying at you, dodging bullets, powerups...I believe that every Mexican restaraunt in the United States is given a GALAGA machine when they open...so if you go into the old ones, they still have one of those ancient cabinets from the 80s. The new ones have that combo machine with MS. PAC MAN.

We should have a F:AT GALAGA tournament or something...that would be fun. Best score in a month wins a game or something.

POPULOUS was on the Amiga, but I had it for Genesis. Great game. Needs an update badly.

You could probably install it, or a clone of it, right onto this website. I installed a bunch of clone games onto a forum I ran once. With high scores attached to user profiles and such.

Coming out on the DS in late Oct, I believe. Last I heard it was just a straight port but little info is out yet really. I had the Amiga version, which was awesome, and its distant cousin Powermonger which was really my first introduction to wargames. The best part of Powermonger was slaughtering the sheep that dotted the landscape to feed your army.

I have also gotten heavily into shmups for the first time recently; never had the urge before. Really enjoying Lords of Thunder on the Wii, as well as Castle of Shikigami II, Gradius V and Raiden III on the PS2. They all kick my ass and I enjoy it. Also I have Geometry Wars for the Wii winging its way to my house.

On my list to acquire is Axelay and Sin and Punishment on the VC and Bangai-O for the DS.

LORDS OF THUNDER is the bomb...it's hard as hell too. The only thing is that water suit is way better than the others, so it's hard to not pick it every time. The music rules.

VC has a lot of great shooters...SOLIDER BLADE, GATE OF THUNDER, BLAZING LASERS, AXELAY...some great stuff. The "must buy" though, I'd say, is LORDS.

Gotta get SIN & PUNISHMENT...supposedly it's really short, but it looks cool. And it's Treasure.

Just ordered a Gamecube copy of IKARUGA...hope it's as good as RADIANT SILVERGUN.

I just remember Defender, Asteroids, Chopper Command, Space Invaders and River Raid on the Atari.

RIVER RAID...now that's an awesome game. I played that SO MANY TIMES when I was kid.

I liked STARGATE better than DEFENDER because it had...well, stargates.

Make sure you grab DODONPACHI...those J-shooters are where it's at. It kind of loses something because you're not pumping quarters in it (which almost makes it like gambling)...but they're still a blast, and you can finish them in like 20 minutes.

Y'all should go try this demo...this game is a fuckin' blast-

http://jng.rakeingrass.com/

It's kind of like UN SQUADRON/CARRIER WING with a lot more shopping options...it has more depth than most shmups- ship upgrades, lots of secrets, mission goals...it's one of the best I've played in the middle of this shmup mania I'm caught in.

I downloaded a couple hundred shooter games for MAME this weekend plus the Touhou Project games. I haven't played much yet because I discovered I hate using my keyboard for them and don't want to use my flightstick either. So I'm ordering a PC game controller this week.

Where did you find Radiant Silvergun? I can't get it to work on MAME and didn't see it for Saturn on the ROM download site.

Is there any benefit to playing the console version of a game versus the MAME version? I'm assuming the consoles are just direct ports of the arcade versions.

Have you looked at screenshots of Galaga Legions. I think it hits the 360 in the next couple of weeks.

It is by the team that did the first good pacman game since the original two. And looks absolutely batshit insane.

This one images says more than most:

God damn it that looks awesome. God damn it I don't own a 360.

I did get IKARUGA though. Possibly the hardest game I've ever played. I think it's harder than RADIANT SILVERGUN.

I got Ikaruga but haven't tried it yet. I know, I know.

Right now I am obsessing on Raiden III for PS2. I love the 3 different weapons: spread-shooter, blue straight ahead laser, green laser that points in the direction you move. I especially like the look of the blue laser as it powers up, as it starts to glow around the edges. Sadly I usually die around that point so I never get to see it fully powered...on easy difficulty too. Sigh.

Anyone try Bangai-o Spirits on DS yet? Supposed to be insane.

Ikaruga is a puzzle game disguised as a shmup.

Brilliant game though. Owned the GCN copy and had a burned copy for the DC.

I can't be bothered to read this entire thread though.

Anyone actually own some ARCADE hardware?

I do.

Currently have Neo Geo MVS and Capcom CPS2 setups.

Original hardware for the win (if you're crazy).

For everyone else, mame will suffice.
