Catlovers … stand free to worship aristocratic independence, self-respect, and individual personality joined to extreme grace and beauty as typified by the cool, lithe, cynical, and unconquered lord of the housetops.

~ H. P. Lovecraft

One day only Kickstarter for the Cthulhu Wars: Bubastis Faction, a faction of cats.

Bubastis is probably the weirdest faction of them all. It doesn’t have any cultists. It doesn’t have a Great Old One. It does have Bastet, an Elder God (not quite the same). Like other factions it has 6 spellbooks that are gained in the normal way (though of course with her own unique requirements). One of her most unusual features is that it has a separate map tile representing the Moon. This Moon is the Bubastis starting area. It counts as a Bubastis-controlled gate for all purposes, except that it can’t be seized by another faction. No other gate can be built or moved there (except Yog-Sothoth via the Catnapping spellbook). Bubastis units can move and be pained freely between the Moon and any other map area. Other factions can move or be pained FROM the Moon to the main map area, but they can’t move TO the Moon on their own.

Since your cats can’t build or occupy gates, the Moon is their only gate throughout the game.

This faction is extremely aggressive. They don’t play “defense” because they want to always be in your areas causing trouble. Like kittens I guess. And Bubastis is hard to KO, because you can’t steal her gates. You have to just kill the kitties one by one.

I don't do Cthulhu Wars, but thematically this makes a lot of sense to have cats in the game.

They played an elusive yet strong role in a few stories, especially the dreamlands stories like Through the Gate of the Silver Key.

One day only for the KS [is] ridiculous though. I hear some stuff for Cthulhu Wars is hard to come by.

After hearing such good things about the game, and being tantalized by this faction, the limited purchasing window pushes me away.

Do you have a life that prevents you from hovering over game news sites 24/7 and buying something you'd enjoy? Sucks to be you. Go to the scalpers, you scrub.

I hate limited edition game snobbery.

they mention somewhere that there will be a pledge manager for late backers at some point down the road, and that the faction will be available theoretically on their website at some point in the future as well (i say theoretically because ive never actually seen any factions available on their website myself. they all just show as sold out always, but i assume at some point they were available).

That's one of the things that has kept me from being a full-on CW enthusiast. If I want to give you money so I have more ways to play the game, don't give me limited-time bullshit or make me chase expansions down like they were 1930s-era baseball cards. I get that Petersen Games is not like a regular publisher and can't warehouse or distribute in the same way that Asmodee can. But treating everything like one-time FOMO opportunities is an effective marketing plan only to a point. With the wealth of options out there, you have to provide some level of accessibility or people (like me) will turn to other things that they can actually obtain and enjoy, since we can't be part of the club.

100% agree. The gate-keeping on this game makes me very happy that my friend owns the game, and not me.

Petersen Games really loves to play the FOMO game.

Yea the full Cthulhu wars package is a thing for lunatics to chase. I got a great deal on the base game, and would like to grab a couple factions to mix and match. Theyre too expensive and hard to get to even try to get many of those, let alone the billion other things. It's a shame, but I think just the base game and a couple factions will be plenty of game.

There's a wager in the company staff. Someone said they could clear $250k in funding in 24 hours.

I guess they solved (or this is solving) the company's cash flow issues. IIRC, less than a year ago they were considering running a no-reward KS just to get money to pay for production of their previous KS's. The FOMO business model gets them 100k from this already so I predict they'll do more of these smaller KS's to try and climb out of the hole they dug with the bigger ones.

Just because it's not funny doesn't mean it's not a joke.

A shame it was on April Fools Day as I was too busy reading other stuff (like one our of major sporting codes using a large stadium to farm sheep in between games as a parallel source of income) and did not have time to get into this .....

I really don't believe the thread title :-)

I did give it a sideways glance... but have no interest in CW so I declined. But hey... cats.

I presume you're joking, but they've said in their Discord server that their most optimistic estimate amongst their staff was it might break $100k, so it far exceeded their expectations. They added a new CW faction, of course it's going to sell well, whether its cats or badgers.

Oh, and regarding FOMO, you can also order this in the pledge manager in their next KS starting later this month (for the "last" CW faction). But I get the feelings of being rushed by the 24 hour KS, but they've been doing it for the past two years on April Fools. It's just the past two years it was a painted rock or some extra painted minis.

I'm just relieved that the cat faction isn't named after H.P. Lovecraft's cat.

Just following up two days later to make certain everyone knows this was an elaborate prank.

I willing gave Petersen a few bucks years ago for a painted rock that summons Deep Ones. Thus far, the denizens of Innsmouth have not come to retrieve me.

"2,184 backers pledged $143,862 to help bring this project to life."

Not a backer myself but if KS charged 2k people for a prank they should boot Petersen from making further KS's. Also the update from 4/2 doesn't mention April Fools.

I think it's a joke but I also think they plan on delivering this as an actual product. They've stated you can add the faction in the upcoming Kickstarter.

I wouldn't pledge for something like this, but the actual abilities for the faction sound interesting.

Drewcula was making a joke about one of their previous April fools campaigns which delivered you a hand painted rock that was supposed to summon a deep one, and clearly did no such thing (but they did deliver hand-painted rocks to backers). They absolutely are delivering product here, that they claim is fully designed and play-tested. I'm sure skeptics will abound here on that last point, but people are getting a product...

They charged me $84 on the 2nd, which suggests that yes, we will be receiving cat mini's and gold-filigreed Cthulhu Wars dice next summer.

I was leaving an asinine stab at humor.

But in all honesty - the joke is on me. I'm one of those few that refuse to spend much time on social media during April fools Day. I'm a prankster, and I enjoy a good laugh. But I also enjoy getting work done, and Monday was going not going to be productive if I went down the internet's rabbit hole.

So... I missed out on Sandy's joke / not joke.

I'm one of those rare Cthulhu Wars competionist guys. So this 24 hour Kickstarter could not have come at a worse time.

I suppose I can wait another two years, and get the cat faction from the Petersen Games Online Store, presuming they learn how to properly inventory their stuff. BUT. If any old school F:ATtie wants to let me jump on their eventual Pledge Manager, you know I'm good for it.

Also, come visit me and my CW assortment in Washington D.C. sometime.

Drew, they should be available in the pledge manager for the next faction which they plan on launching soon.

I'm still debating on whether to pick them up. I'm not a completionist for this game, but truth be told, the abilities described for the cats sound pretty unique.
