Cosmic Encounter gets a "42nd anniversary" edition on Towel Day

Game Information

There Will Be Games

In the far reaches of space, the aliens of the cosmos vie for control of the universe. Alliances are constantly forged and broken in the pursuit of power as starships journey from planet to planet, ready to build colonies and battle foreign powers. Only one species can win dominance and ensure the survival of their people as they spread throughout the stars. Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Cosmic Encounter 42nd Anniversary Edition!

Now is the perfect time to return to Cosmic Encounter or to experience the classic game of intergalactic colonization for the first time. Cosmic Encounter 42nd Anniversary Edition will become the new standardized version of the game when it hits shelves in Q3 of 2018. For more information about the game and the exciting changes that await, read on!

A scan of the preview suggests there are no major changes in this edition. The new material includes:

- A revised rulebook for easier teaching

- A deck of "Cosmic Combo" cards with suggested sets of alien powers for a game

- Translucent plastic ships

- At least one new alien power, Demoni

Good there's no big changes. It's not like such a classic needs any.

I wouldn't mind a copy of that Cosmic Combo deck though to speed setup and teaching. I guess a home made reference sheet will work just as well once the combos are know.

No word if there will be "upgrades" available for existing owners. I imagine a lot of fans will want that Demon.

I'm unlikely to upgrade and buy a new FFG edition to replace the one that I have, but, a refresh for new fans sounds great. Also, I still have an EON edition of Cosmic that no one wants.

With the 42 and towel day, will it include the mostly harmless humans?

I have all of the precious edition and I don’t really need (or want) combo guidance. But translucent ships.........

The suggested combos for intial games is a Good Idea. Cosmic flopped for me the two times I played it, but I always wonder if it was bad alien combos+newbs?

Is it just me, or does it seem like the covers just get worse and worse?

The original was a bit bland, but after highlighting aliens on the cover, I find I miss it's generic quality.

None of the Cosmic box covers have ever done a good job of showing what the game is about, but then I'm not sure how they could.

I dunno man, I think the original cover did a pretty good job. It just looks like goofy 70s sci-fi, which is exactly what Cosmic Encounter is.

I'm thankful this seems like basically a reprint more than a new edition. The new ships and the combo cards seem pretty neat, but I like that the graphics seem basically the same. Hopefully that means the expansions will still be compatible with this new version (seems to be) and any new stuff will continue to remain compatible with old ones.

So I was thinking no big deal, it's all going to compatible, then I glanced at Coolstuff and saw this:

www.coolstuffinc.com/main_search.php?pa=...5&q=cosmic+encounter

Coolstuff doesn't do the best job keeping everything in stock or anything, but they have nothing except the latest couple expansions still in stock and they're blowing one of them out. (edit: looks like it's a coolstuff problem, nm, ffg has all the expansions available pretty much)
