There Will Be Games

Ok, so I just got a couple of sell sheets from Fantasy Flight Games announcing their October releases.

We've got some solid info on the Battlestar Galactica game that pretty much confirms what we already knew, but SURPRISE!  The game comes with HUNDREDS OF CARDS!  Whodathunkit?  I did notice that among the crises the players have to deal as crewmembers on Galactica that "Lazy, sloppy, and generally rushed fourth season writing" was not among them.  $39.95 retail?  Get outta here!

An ARKHAM HORROR expansion, out of nowhere.  And SURPRISE!  HUNDREDS OF CARDS!  If my source is correct, there's going to be a big expansion after this one that's going to be awesome, featuring HUNDREDS OF CARDS and possibly _two_ boards.  Yikes.  At this rate, AH will take over the world by 2012.  What's that about the Mayan Calender?

RED NOVEMBER sounds like one of those "good" Bruno Faidutti games, but I'm disappointed that a game with a Soviet-sounding title, a Soviet-influenced graphic design and typography scheme, and set on a submarine is about...gnomes.  Boo.  Could be fun, it's a Silver Line title.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE GAME

After the Cylon attack on the Colonies, the battered remnants of the human race are on the run,
constantly searching for the next signpost on the road to Earth. They face the threat of Cylon attack fromwithout, and treachery and crisis from within. Humanity must work together if they are to have any hopeof survival…but how can they, when any of them may, in fact, be a Cylon agent?

Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is an exciting game of mistrust, intrigue, and the struggle for
survival. Based on the epic and widely-acclaimed new Sci Fi Channel series, Battlestar Galactica: The
Board Game puts players in the role of one of ten of their favorite characters from the show. Each
playable character has their own abilities and weaknesses, and must all work together in order for
humanity to have any hope of survival. However, one or more players in every game secretly side with
the Cylons. Players must attempt to expose the traitor while fuel shortages, food contaminations, and
political unrest threatens to tear the fleet apart.

The game includes 10 character cards, 32 highly-detailed plastic ships, high-quality card board tokens,
hundreds of cards and a game board with resource counters. Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is a
semi- cooperative game for 3-6 players ages 10 and up that can be played in 2-3 hours.

ARKHAM HORROR: BLACK GOAT OF THE WOODS EXPANSION

A dangerous cult has risen in Arkham! Meeting in secret, these heretics and madmen consort with dark
powers and offer up sacrifices to the Ancient One, while hordes of vicious monsters descend on the the
town. It’s up to a small band of investigators to infiltrate the cult and learn from these dark rituals, yet
even the most pure-hearted may find himself corrupted in the process. Will their efforts be enough to
stop the Ancient One from awakening, or will the investigators succumb, one by one, to the blasphemous seduction of its Herald, the Black Goat of the Woods?

The Black Goat of the Woods is an small expansion for the Arkham Horror board game. This expansion
features 88 new Ancient One cards, 9 new monster markers, 1 Herald Sheet, and 76 new Investigator
cards including new items, new spells, and the dangerous lure of corruption…

RED NOVEMBER

With every passing minute, something else goes horribly wrong for these gnomish submariners. Can you avoid the flooding, fires, nuclear meltdown and hungry kraken outside until help arrives?
Red November, an original game by Bruno Faidutti and Jef Gontier, is a cooperative race against the
clock. Players assume the role of a gnome adventurer trapped inside of a doomed submarine. Each
player moves a their figure around the sub-marine and tracks that character with a stackable time keeperof the same color. As players move around the board, more and more fires, floods, and reactor failurespop up. The gnomes must find tools capable of fixing the problem or down a bottle of grog to work upsome liquid courage and avoid disaster.

Part of Fantasy Flight's Silver Line of games, this game boasts quick innovative game play, whimsical
characters and charming illustrations for two to eight players ages twelve and up. Red November is
playable in 1-2 hours.

Now...REIGNS OF POWER, where are you?

Sometime in the early 1980s, MichaelBarnes’ parents thought it would be a good idea to buy him a board game to keep him busy with some friends during one of those high-pressure, “free” timeshare vacations. It turned out to be a terrible idea, because the game was TSR’s Dungeon! - and the rest, as they say, is history. Michael has been involved with writing professionally about games since 2002, when he busked for store credit writing for Boulder Games’ newsletter.
