There Will Be Games

forklift.jpg

So hey, you know...it's a new year, a fresh start, time to wipe the old slate clean and begin anew.  Time to forget the sins of the past, turn over a new leaf, make yourself a better preson.

Our suggestion--make it YOUR New Year's Resolution to start paying more attention to the world around you.  It sounds difficult, but we can help.  Just click inside.

twilight_creations.gifTwilight Creations to release games without "Zombies!!!" in the title:

Twilight Creations have a couple of upcoming projects of note...both items from their website:

"Twilight Creations, Inc., the publishers of the popular Zombies!!! Board game, has reached an agreement with Pinnacle Entertainment Group to create a board game from their award-winning, best-selling Deadlands property.

The game, to be designed by Kerry and Todd Breitenstein of Twilight Creations with input from Shane Hensley, the creator of Deadlands, is set for initial release in June. "This will be one of the largest releases we have ever done," said Mr. Breitenstein. "We really love the Deadlands world and we hope it shows in the final product."

"We have been toying with the board game idea for a long time," said Mr. Hensley. "Todd and Kerry have been big supporters and great friends from the beginning and I really look forward to seeing what we can do with it."

Originally released in 1996, Deadlands has been a consistent seller and is considered one of the classic, core products in the hobby-game industry. The ground-breaking game was the first roleplaying game to combine classic western elements with magic and horror. It has spun off many expansions, supplements and ancillary products including comics, miniatures, collectible card games, and short stories.

"We are tremendously excited," said Twilight Creations' President Todd Breitenstein adding, "This is going to be a great product for everyone who's ever loved Deadlands."

zombiegeddon.jpgIn addition to that, it appears the Good Doktor wants in on the zombie action:

"Reiner Knizia’s Zombiegeddon is a fast-paced, perfect-information, strategy game. Each player spends the first half of the game rushing around the board collecting supplies and trying to stop your pesky neighbors from taking stuff that is rightfully yours. (At least as far as you are concerned!)

The second half of the game is spent trying to survive. Sure, there is some good stuff around, but it certainly isn’t plentiful and let’s face it, everyone is still trying to take it before you do! (Whoever has the most stuff at the end of the game wins!) "

All I can add to that is...a perfect information zombie game?!?!  Maybe Reiner can pull out a good game from this, but the previous "MMmmmm....Brains!" doesn't appear to inspire much confidence.

godzilla_vs_gigan_1972.jpgBerg To Design "Godzilla"...no word on Matthew Broderick's availability

Thanks to David Knepper for posting this to our local Huntsville gaming list...it's a promotional blurb about Richard Berg's new game:

" *GODZILLA* will recreate all the action with the kaiju of the famous Toho (licensed) movies. Kaiju will battle kaiju . . .and humans . . . to  destroy cities and each other.

This will be the first in a series of games that will all be playable by themselves but will add new and  different kaiju to the series, as well as enabling players to "build" bigger cities. The games will include figures of the kaiju as well as  building pieces to give players a great 3-D visual effect, as well as enabling them to destroy all those buildings.

The game uses a unique  Battle Card system to resolve combat. The first game will include Godzilla, Gigan, Rodan and Ghidorah.

*GODZILLA* will be fast, furious fun fighting game for ages 8 and up . . . with a playing time of one hour or less.

*Designed By:* Richard H. Berg "

Berg?  In an hour or less?  Has the apocalypse come?  No word yet on how this will compare to the recently released Monsterpocalypse, but if Berg's new game is non-collectible, I'll check it out for sure.

toilet.jpgWe'd announced it previously, but over the holiday break Topps made it official:

"The Topps Company announced today that WizKids will immediately cease operations and discontinue its product lines.

Scott Silverstein, CEO of Topps, said “This was an extremely difficult decision. While the company will still actively pursue gaming initiatives, we feel it is necessary to align our efforts more closely with Topps current sports and entertainment offerings which are being developed within our New York office.”

Upon notifying our partners, Topps will immediately pursue strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without noticeable disruption. To that end, WizKids will continue supporting Buy it By the Brick redemptions for Arkham Asylum, and the December Organized Play events for HeroClix.

For consumer announcements, please refer to
http://www.wizkidsgames.com/ over the coming days for further information. "

Topps never did seem to know what to do with Wizkids...and if ever there was a company in need of some good corporate guidance, it was definitely Wizkids.  Oh well, at least Wizkids made an impact and left quite a legacy with their non-collectible pre-painted miniatures games.

The good news in all of this is of course:  CHEAP HEROCLIX ON EBAY~!

F:AT--finding the bright side in the darkest of news since 2007.

asmodee-logo-rvb-clair.jpg

Asmodee May Be Giants

I've been digging a lot of Asmodee's output over the past year, but not sure what to make from this one.  From their website:

"Giants:  The monumental statues of the Easter Island, known as moais, are one of the most fascinating exploits attributed to mankind. How did a handful of sculptors, tucked away on a miniscule island, ever manage such a feat? Isolated from the rest of the world, they built more than 800 statues, each weighing several tons with certain measuring nearly 10 meters tall.

Cooperation between the tribes, innovative use of wood and their earnest hard work are certainly part of the explanation for their incredible feat. These stone giants are one of the rare vestiges of a highly refined civilization, the Rapanui, who prospered for more than a millennium in peace and tranquility. Now it's your turn to relive their inspiring adventure as builders of the moais!

Giants a game from Matagot editions, will be distrituted in North America by Asmodee. "

Dunno...sounds a little too Euro-ish and "let's build stuff together!" to me.  Knowing Asmodee however, it will probably be a gorgeous production.  Maybe we'll get little plastic Easter Island heads that can double as thrown weapons in a jam.

egm_wolverine.jpgThe "G" Must Stand for "Gone"

I blogged about this already a couple of days ago, but long-running videogame magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly has ceased publication.  To my knowledge, the issue you see to the left represents what will be the final one, with no proper "send-off" issue to be produced.  That's a pity, as for many years EGM has been one of the premiere video gaming magazines around.

From an article on DailyTech.com announcing the news:

"Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM) has been cancelled as a result of UGO Entertainment and parent company Hearst Corporation’s acquisition of the 1UP network. EGM was one of the oldest still running gaming magazines in America and provided video game news, previews and reviews for the past two decades.

EGM, which was published by Ziff Davis as part of the 1UP Network, released 12 issues a year and this year would have been the magazines twentieth anniversary. The January 2009 issue will be the final issue of EGM. Other properties of 1UP that will be taken over by UGO include: MyCheats.com, Gamevideos.com, and Gametab.com. Popular podcasts such as the 1UP Show video podcast and 1UP Yours audio podcast are most likely cancelled.

Ziff Davis CEO Jason Young provided standard lip service calling the sale, "a smart transaction for Ziff Davis Media that places market leading assets and teams in a great environment poised for further success,". The PC World article suggests Ziff Davis’s debt and bankruptcy issues contributed to the business decision to sell 1UP."

Tragic, man.  Truly tragic.  Bathroom trips will now have to do without EGM, expect toilet times to be 50% faster (unless they replace subscriptions of EGM with Playboy, for which the opposite impact may occur.)

television.jpgBOOB TUBE

-For those of you *truly*not paying attention last night, the Florida Gators are the new College Football National Champions after defeating the Oklahoma Sooners, 24-14.  Tim Tebow essentially carried the team on his back, perhaps having extra motivation from an Oklahoma linesman who dismissed Tebow as being "maybe the 4th best" quarterback in college football.  Now that the SEC has won the last three national championships, not sure how much fuel the "SEC is Overrated" crowd will still have, but I'm sure they'll be out in full force next season all the same.

- Been missing your Jack Bauer fix?  24 returns this weekend, with four hours airing
