Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Descent: Journeys in the Dark

A fantasy dungeon crawl game using modular boards and scenarios, the game system is an updated version of Doom: The Boardgame. One player acts as the dungeon master while the others take on the roles of adventurers cooperatively exploring a fantasy dungeon. The game is set in Fantasy Flight Games' Terrinoth universe (the same as used for Runebound). 20 plastic miniature heroes and 60 plastic miniature monsters.

The game of choice amongst my buddies. It's got it all: Loads of characters, tons of monsters, cool miniatures, traps, terrain, variable powers, customizable Overlord deck, tons of items, treasure, squad-based gameplay, 3 expansions and even campaign play.

Descent is awesome.

The key expansions to get are the Well of Darkness for the addition of the Overlord treachery rules. Altar of Despair has treachery too, but it has fewer store items and adds some stuff that isn't included in Road to Legend.

If you want to add campaigns, making the game more of an RPG lite, get the Road to Legend expansion as it radically changes the game.

The base game by itself is pretty good, but I feel it's too easy for the heroes. The Well of Darkness expansion balances things some (also balances the treasure decks) and gives the Overlord more options which equals more fun.

Must have for any Ameritrasher.

This is D&D lite folks. Right here. Roll a char, equip them and kill bad guys. That the Overlord actually gets to play a game instead of facilitate an experience makes it even better. A total blast.

My Introduction to the Hobby

Descent was my first hobby board game. I played it non-stop, for a long time. Once the initial shine wears off, it gets very tedious, with the Overlord constantly stuffing choke points with monsters. It can take an hour to traverse a single dungeon chamber. Killing the wizard over and over gets boring as well.

If you must play it, play it with the Road to Legend expansion. This adds bite-sized dungeons, an overland map, and campaign play. It's very cool. These days though... I'd search for something better.

Like the Doom boardgame, Descent is a thematic but repetitive dicefest that offers minimal tactical decisions. I have played just once. Descent was fun for about the first hour, with lots of combat and those neat dice. By the third hour, I was bored with the sameness of it all. There seemed to be little narrative beyond open door/kill monsters/repeat/repeat/end. And death for the player characters was a joke, kind of a cross between a trip to the penalty box and a trip to the mall.
