Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.
Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;
Two games enter! One game leaves!

10 hours for TI3 is OK?
Who the hell do you play with? Zombies? It's about 50-60 minutes per player when your good. A 6 player game should clock in just under 6 hours. Descent about 4. Length shouldn't be an issue on this page, these are both long games. I prefer TI3 because I can't stand sharing a victory... it's just not the same. So only Overlord victories feel really good to me. But really... 10 hours, that's insane.
I've never played TI3, but the report of the WBC finals said the game went for 11 hours.

That must have been one hell of a game.

Must have been epic all right!
But, that's rare, they probably had 8 players (which I've never done) and a whole load of extra's. One of TI3's strong points is the amazing amount of options that allow you to customize your game experience in some really interesting ways... the mechanics can actually change as you sub in different strategy cards, add mines, or leaders, or distant suns or... They may have even been palying the epic 12 player game, I've heard of these but never even considered playing one myself.
Standard TI3 is a six player game, done in probably 7 hours your first time or two and then decreased to a 4-5.5 hour game depending on how it goes.

Derk states on my podcast that he started a 6 player game with newbies that went 6 hours and they were no where near finished.

I've heard of this kind of stuff on BGG, but I've never met anyone who can actually make the game take that long. I'm not even sure how it is possible, unless they watched a movie or two and cooked and ate a meal at a leisurely pace during the game.Standard TI3 is a six player game, done in probably 7 hours your first time

The people who say a 4 player game takes them 10+ hours? I think at least one of the players involved must have a special talent and I would really like to watch them play to see what's going on (a time-lapse video, that is).

I've heard 8 a few times but we finished out first one in 7... of course everyone came prepared, read all the rules ahead of time, we used the age of empire variant, and we used the simulated early turns (which we don't use anymore), pre-set maps, and no add-ons, so that does make a huge difference. The key is to do your research ahead of time.
Once you've played, all of this is significantly reduced. I can't even think of another game that get's it's initial play time cut down sooooo much upon repeated plays. They really can end in 4 once your fast... not always but half the time anyway.

I just wanted to say that I'm finding the comments about TI3 in this Trashdome very informative leading up to our first game. Hopefully, some of the tips shared will make our first game go more smoothly. I also re-read Matt's in-depth review of TI3 on BGG yesterday and have to say it is excellent. Some great advice contained therein for the aspiring TI3 player.

He came home last weekend and says that he wants to play TI3. This game singlehandedly converted him from being a pansy ass eurogamer to a fledging ameritrasher. We're going to organize an 8-player 10-hour marathon TI3 game. It's going to be epic, everyone's excited and we're just waiting for everyone's schedules to clear up.
It's not something we would do for Descent, to set aside an entire day to play one single massive game.

There are "trade goods", which you can give to any player at any time, for any reason. Or do you mean you wish people could trade planets? The one think that bothers me about TI3 is that trading is forbidden. I would love to bribe teh others and such. Also a question: how does it play with 4 people? Thanks.
I think 4 player TI3 is great. Doesn't take more than 3 or 4 hours, and each player gets 2 strat cards (which I actually really like).

Uh, that changes everything. The guy who teached us the game said that the goods only come to you through the trade agreements and that it can't be used to bribe. My interest in the game is rekindled, thanks for the answer.
Yeah it helps when you play the game correctly.
You can, and should be bribing every damn thing that happens in that game.

I have a friend who works in Thailand, big eurogamer. His favorite games are Agricola and Puerto Rico.

Play 4 player 1st. He is not ready for the big game yet and you will turn him off.
