I love them both, but I think Birdman is better overall. Whiplash is kind of one-note (musical pun not intended), and it does that really well, but Birdman has interesting things to say about different things, and yet feels cohesive. It's also more ambitious in its scope and production, and while Whiplash has those two amazing lead performances, Birdman's whole ensemble is incredible.

Watched a couple of films this weekend:
Bloodsucking Freaks - This was a Xmas gift from a friend who knows my love for cinematic trash/filth. HO-LEE-SHIT...this fucking film. They certainly don't make em like this anymore. Pure celluloid sleaze. Naked women being tortured in numerous different ways. Cannibalistic naked chicks. Sadistic dwarf minion. Hairy beavers. Ballerina-Fu. Human trafficking. Corrupt Italian cop. This film has it all and more. It's so horribly done, that it's almost charming, but man most people would question your sanity if they walked in and saw you watching this. The main guy named Sardu is hoot...he is so over the top with his fey, giddy personality it's hard not to enjoy his screen-time. I'm glad I finally got to watch this infamous piece of crap...that fact that I'm totally desensitized to this type of shit is SORT of worrying lol.
Chinatown - OK, so I go from cinematic trash to an AFI Top 100 film. What I can say...I've got widely varying tastes! This is another film where you can say, "they just don't make em like this anymore". Chinatown is a total classic through and through. Excellent acting, great script, wonderfully done music, perfect pacing...everything is top notch. Polanski did such a good job to make this feel like the whole thing actually took place in the 20s/30s. The picture just feels very authentic. It's like a time capsule of a bygone era of movies. The yarn unravels at a slow, but enjoyable pace. It allows you to become fully invested in the mystery. Once it hooks you in you're sitting on the edge of your seat. The final act is a whirlwind of shocking revelations and tense moments. Just a great film all around.

47 Ronin - I can't understand why the critics disliked this so much. 47 Ronin is one of the greatest stories from the history of Japan, pumped up in this movie version with fantasy elements, stuntwork and CGI. Although the character played by Keanu Reeves was added to the story for this movie, I thought that he played a necessary role in the proceedings, as an outsider who doesn't question his role. And his connection to the tengu was also useful, as the tengu leader was able to serve as an outsider who does criticize Japanese customs, making the story more accessible to a western audience. Maybe I'm biased because I read a fair amount of Japanese history before running a Legend of the Five Rings rpg campaign that lasted over three years. But while western critics and audiences may have found Keanu's performance flat and the ending a downer, I found Keanu's acting to be suitably muted for this role, and the ending was highly appropriate for the setting.

Ex Machina is absolutely brilliant and gripping. Kind of plays out ultimately in a way you expect, but still keeps you guessing and intrigued. I loved it. I recognized one of the two main actors from an episode of Black Mirror, and that show's style and premise would be an apt comparison for this film.
Also, based purely on visceral style and action, that Mad Max trailer looks amazing.

To be clear, I'm thanking you for the head's up on Ex Machina, not your incorrect interpretation of a trailer for dumb people.

I honestly haven't watched a movie in a really long time but the family sat down to watch Paddington the other day and I was blown away. It has a dollhouse/Wes Anderson feel at times, a touch of surrealism and absurdism, a very predictable story but it doesn't even matter. It's just so damned charming and beautifully shot that it makes up for a lot of other problem people may see in the film.
I loved Paddington as a kid so it hit all the right nostalgia buttons for me but I just can't understand what kind of grumpy sod would think this movie was anything other than magical even without the nostalgia. If you want to watch a movie with a young one I doubt you'll find anything better than this around. It's pretty much perfect and it was a big hit with our whole family.

I
Ah, normally I'm not too big on nonstop action stuff, and though I liked the original Mad Max films, I didn't really care at all about a reboot. But man, on the big screen that was an intense two minute trailer. And I think Tom Hardy is a great choice for that role.
But Ex Machina, wow. Best sci-fi thriller in years.

wow, that's big praise and then I think about it for a sec and we haven't seen anything good in years in the sci-fi thriller genre. The last decent sci-fi movie we got was probably Ender's Game and that was just 'good'. I don't think we've seen anything of substance since Moon and District 9.
Really looking forward to Ex Machina now, thanks.
Is it ok that I'm attracted to that robot girl?
Craniac, it wouldn't be worth it WITHOUT arabic subtitles, let alone with. The movie is ok, much better than the second installment but still a far cry from the first one. It's good to very good, but I think you can still skip it for 10 bucks. Also, Edward Snowden says you shouldn't buy movies with arabic subtitles

Saw Age of Ultron and didn't like it. Whedon, trying to cram character development into it created a bottle neck of supposedly touching moments that fragmented and spilled all over the place and in the end meant nothing. The film had no tension. It felt very forced. It could have been a good 12-episode TV season, but as a film it was a mess.

A friend was trying to describe Ex Machina to me without spoiling the movie, but it sounded a lot like Her, which came out just a couple of years ago.
