The Star Wars Solo (not just Han) Films
For Han, this isn't a Mel Gibson/Tom Hardy situation. Nobody cared about Max and he wasn't plastered all over merch for the past three decades. Ford has been the face of Han Solo for almost 40 years. I think replacing him is a mistake. Plus, why tell a young Han story? If using a different actor, why not simply do something...I dunno...new. How about Dash Rendar as a young smuggler film? Or a new character in the new timeline? The young Solo call is lame.
Boba Fett...really? Whenever a cool villain is either over exposed or turned into some sort of anti-hero the results usually aren't all that hot. See Vader and Venom. Fett's charm is his masked man of mystery who's been warned not to disintegrate. That was cool. Adding him to the SEs was not cool and I'm not sure we need a whole feature on him.
But the rumors of Ewan McGregor in some Kenobi films is very cool. He's still kicking around and in fine shape. If Disney must use a pre-exisiting character let's do this. There seems to be some cool stories to tell with him that won't ruin the character. How about how he's hunted by the Empire as one of the last living Jedi? Maybe how he leads the Empire away from thinking Luke is on Tattoine (something has to be done to explain that). Maybe he's seeking the ghost of Qui-Gon Jinn to learn that spirit trick. Was he the one who fathered then dumped Rey on Jakku? Whatever. But I think it's a great idea to throw McGregor a bone like that. Let him redeem himself and the character in a badass SW flick.
C'mon, Disney, _this_ rumor has me excited for Star Wars.

I don't want to know what's in the box at the end of Barton Fink, I never wanted to know Wolverines origin and I don't want to know what Han Solo was like as a young man. You think you do, but removing that mystery usually hurts more than it helps. There is an episode in the the Clone Wars TV show (Rookies) where a bunch of clones are on a lonely outpost together and they get attacked. One of the younger ones struggles to know who he is despite being a clone of all the other men at the outpost - an older clone gives him some good advice. None of these characters made appearances before this episode and I don't recall seeing them ever again afterwards. It kind of reminded me of Moon in a way and that is what I would like to see Disney doing with this property. Telling stories of people we would never hear of otherwise and examining some of the social issues or basic sci-fi concepts that are hidden behind the opera in Star Wars. I think it's possible to do this and still be entertaining and pop. Whether or not they have the balls to try I don't know but I like to think that with all the cash they're raking in on this there is no reason why they can't afford to spend a little extra on some vanity projects once in awhile.

I'd much rather see spin-offs in the "current" Star Wars universe. I'd totally watch a Poe Damerian movie. Or a movie about a new, young smuggler, or bounty hunter, or spy or whatever.

Seems like he could be a player in the next movie and it would be nice to know his backstory

The original Han Solo trilogy in book form, Han Solo at Stars End etc, I remember quite fondly from reading them as a kid. The story of how Han defected or was thrown out of some military organization and how he hooked up with Chewbaca would be great to see.
A different, younger, more vibrant actor could easily do the role. Sean Connery is not the only Bond. Ford need not be the only Solo.
What I really think of when I hear about this is the short lived TV show "Young Indiana Jones". Now, that show was a freakin' fantastic idea and parts of it are really fun. It was executed poorly though..with Indiana fighting against nazis in 1914 and other silly shit. But the basic premise and the setting of him stumbling through WW1 as a teenager was brilliant. Also, the opening sequence in Last Crusade where River Pheonix played him as an older teen was really awesome too. I don't think the character lost anything by us finding out where the fear of snakes, the scar, and the hat and whip came from.
So, I for one look forward to it.
