This isn't that different from an established publisher funding a game through ks, the exception is this is obviously targeted at locals in the area, and those people would likely benefit from a game store being in their area, as opposed to backing Escape Big Box, which won't really make anyone's life significantly better.

If I was a teenager these days I think I'd try to lose my virginity through kickstarter and see if I couldn't crowd source a whore for myself.
The people can be paid with an uploaded video of my exploits!! Good lord I'm so happy I grew up before the internet got huge. I'd be a mess right now if I had a whole world to contend with back then.
In all seriousness, there is something very quaint about this kickstarter (and several others I've seen) there is something small town about the vibe of any kickstarter, it helps create the illusion that you are part of a community. I can see the appeal of it. I get that it feels very anti-corporate and exciting, but what people don't realize is that corporations are scum because they are made up of humans and their individual scumminess carries on into the corporate identity. Just because it's independent, doesn't mean it's moral.
I like how they need to make sure the game store is near a place where they can buy junk food. That's a nice touch and it reads as so damned sincere you have to wonder if it's a joke... I don't think it is, it's just poorly written.

only $1 two days after launch. I guess that town doesn't want a games store.

More like people don't see the value in pledging $100 for just a hat and T shirt. Not even a discount on games when the shop opens ? Lame.

You know, companies used to have a way to pledge support and help them raise money. It was called selling stock and your reward wasn't a cool hat...it was money in the form if dividends.
Of course, you had to have a sound business plan and people had to believe you'd be in business longer than 90 days. Hell they might even expect you to turn a profit.
Rest easy though, this place will be located next to the X-tra Mart in the shittiest end of town so you'll have easy access to Mountain Dew and Cheetos. You might get mugged in the parking lot but certain risks must be run.
(Fuck, isn't rule number one of a game store to sell that shit yourself?)

I've been to Rockford, IL a few times...Saw Cowboy Mouth there in fact.
And I had a co-worker that lived there, he could never give me a good answer when I asked "Why?"
