Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
Star Wars: Armada
This was the first game where I controlled my speed on my big ships which let me have a chance at staying engaged and in the right arcs, along with seriously multiplying the number of move orders for that extra turn pip. So my huge recommendation for first time players is to keep your big slow ships moving at 1-2 and make sure to play a lot of move orders in your command queue.
It was also the game where a few misplayed commands meant a huge opportunity was missed---the 3 x-wings and bombers, if I had played a squadron command with my escort frigate w/a command that doubled attacks, would have torpedoed the gladiator before it wrecked the Nebulon and Correllian corvette. Game changing---instead I had a concentrate fire queued up.
But I have bad news:
A) more points the better for the game. Which means lots of ships, which means serious money. That core set still sucks for creating a good game. Once you're into 2-4 ships each side and squadrons you're looking at a fun game---exponentially more fun than the 1-2 ship 150-200 point per side game. Which means this game is fucking expensive. It's worth it but I think everyone needs to know this going in.

But once you get a feel for it- and the kinds of cool maneuvers you can do with the tool like juking left and right, using that extra click to get a better angle, etc...the movement becomes really compelling, much more so than the Flightpath system and far more so than what is in Talon.
The first time I really felt like I had the movement down, I was all over the place with an MC30c, thinking "dang, this thing is fast." But I think you rarely want those big ships to go to two or three speed except in specific tactical situations. The Nebs, C90s, IRs...those are are a different story.
I have to agree somewhat on the VSD...it's probably the most unremarkable ship out of the lot. I can't think of a game I played where I felt it carried the day for the Empire. But with the right upgrades and some decent piloting, I think it's decent just not as exciting as some of the other ships. Very meat and potatoes, and sluggish. I would put a Gladiator out there over a VSD almost any time.
LOVE that ship...total bare knuckle brawler.
Money, I would say don't bother with this game unless you are spending $200-300 at a minimum if you are buying Rebel and Empire fleets. You can do less if you are just getting one side with friends, splitting a core or something, but there is no way you are getting the most out of it without having every ship available per side and a couple of multiples at that.
Planning upgrades, combining effects and so forth is where a tremendous amount of depth comes into it...I've built just a couple of fleets this way, but it does make a huge difference _IF_ you want that level of custom building/pre-game work.

This happened once. But it didn't matter because the second one already tore my ass up.Gary Sax wrote: Fucking gladiator is a MONSTER. But I think it's the most sensitive to quality play. It could get fucking skunked against a careful player and never fire a shot.
Surprised you guys don't dig the Victory. Beef up the side cannons and bulk up with Motti. God, I hate that guy.

Obviously, the upshot of the Victory is that 70-80 points is pretty cheap for all the *potential* firepower it has...

I'm starting to think that despite my love of the B-wing, 2 speed just isn't workable in Armada for fighters.

Also, the Raider is a complete murderer of squadrons, holy shit.

Heh, me either. But I'll enjoy trying to figure it out which is part of the fun for me.Gary Sax wrote: I still have no earthly idea how to use the variant that is only black and red range.
My fighter game is pretty basic still so I've not played Y's and B's enough to say.
I finally got a battle in using the fleet I mentioned earlier.
Kitchen sink ISD with 7 TIES, Fett & Bossk, two Raiders for escort.
VS.
Home One + Mc30c, Solo, Dash Rendar, HWK, & Nym
I kept my flagship away from the Home One and sent my hornet's nest of fighters to poke at it but stupid Han Solo and Dash Rendar showed up to ruin my party. Along with barrages from the Home One I lost all but one of my TIES. My Raider was there for support but flew too close to the Home One and got ganked. Same deal on the right side of the field, the Mc30 just wallops my cheeky Raider with a zillion dice. I had no idea how much damage that thing could do. Christ. Too bad Bossk and my Star Destroyer got in range and shattered that thing into space sparks. Unfortunately, one bad speed change and turn caused me to lose F-arc on the Home One and that was it. I won the fighter game in the end but didn't come out ahead in any way and lost by about 40 points. Losing the second Raider was a huge mistake. It was badass though.

Stanley CLICK 'N CONNECT (STST19900)
The top bin is spacious and easily accomodates the big ships. The center section is high enough to keep Home One on it's stand as well as VSD's*. The ISD is the only one that's too high to leave on it's base. The lid opens toolbox style but you can completely remove it (I suggest doing so). Dials and dice all fit on one side and most tokens fit in the other. The smaller detatchable bottom section perfectly fits upright squadrons** without a lot of space waste. I also have my cards and small ships and etc. in there.
Now since I bought two to three of everything I am already in need of a second bottom bin. I DO have my entire collection in this one unit but it's just a little tight for my preferences. But yeah it all fits. If you don't have that much crap then this is near perfect. Anyway, I ordered another one (STST14440) from Walmart for only $13. I'll try to get pix once that gets here.
*IF you keep the VSD's in the center they will fit without breaking the vertical antenna array. However, make sure you check this out for yourself first. If you live on a bumpy road or something there is no guarantee that they won't bounce into the roof and snap. Note that If you put them on the left or right sides there is not enough vertical room to keep it from snapping off. No, I haven't tested that but it just doesn't look good so don't try it. YMMV!
**Boba Fett is just two hairs too high to fit upright. I found a spot where he does but just keep him on his side to be safe.
Edit: I should mention the manuals don't fit anywhere. Keep them on your phone.

So how much bigger than the base box is it?

I've used it with real opponents too and it makes it WAY easier for a casual player or someone using your ships to get set up.
