Baseball has a limit, they closely study how long games last and tweak their rules/time limits to adjust how long they are on TV every year.
They know the attention span of the average american.

I know what you mean with the article Pete, but I had to chuckle at this bit. See, to me, this kind of thing is not really that different to face painting at the gathering of friends and meeple tattoos on the face, cos you're not determining the fate of an entire galaxy but pretending to be some dumb ass faced alien race called Tharg or something. You have to see the irony, surely?

But you play Twilight Imperium 2, it's an EVENT. You're planting your arse for 4-5 hours duking it out and determining the fate of an entire galaxy. You couldn't even LOCATE Miko's farm from orbit, because it's that insignificant.
And there's a story.

I like the old Gamemaster DOAM games plus some of the offering from Eagle Games before they went under (i.e Conquest of the Empire). But I am selling a practically pristine version of Samurai Swords at a bargain to just get to get the newer Ikusa.
I just like the quality of old DOAM games....but in the new formats.

While I love the drama of a long game, the worst two games I have played in recent times have been compounded in my brain because of the length. Half the problem was starting both late in the evening, not knowing they were that long.
But the converse is also true to the statement here: Just because it is long doesn't mean it is epic, and length without epic-ness gives extreme boredom.

In Britain we have test match Cricket which typically lasts 4-5 days per game. A series between two teams will be between 2-5 games long and result can still be a draw. So we can play 25 days of a sport for it to be declared a draw.
I love test match cricket, and long board games. Whilst i love Sekigahara it is too short to achieve the feeling of an epic struggle like Successors or Hannibal does. However, most people in the UK aren't test cricket fans and don't like long board games. Like the rest of the world they want to cram us much activity into their short live as possible.
