The Legend of Robin Hood

How good is this game? Michael, it sounds like you have played it quite a bit, so feel free to voice your opinion loudly. I have a chance to get this from an acquaintence of a friend for somewhere between $15 and $25 (or so I am told). Is it worth it?

Also, how different is it from the similarly named game, Legends of Robin Hood?

Michael has a review of it on the old blog. I'll try to get it over to the site tonight.

It's good fun, you can play it when drunk, for $15 I'd say get it. You don't want to pay too much more though, it's a little dated in some ways, but you should get your money's worth.

Thanks...sorry for being a jackass and not checking. I saw Michael's comments in the response to Matt's articles and was just assuming that he hadn't given a review or detailed comments yet.

Actually, I think it was the first review I posted over at the blog.

Billy Motion and I played it a couple of weeks ago- I think it's just a fantastic game. It probably doesn't have huge replay value since it has a static setup and some loose scripting, but for 2-3 games a year it's a knockout. It really captures a lot of story material and there's so many cool details- like Robin Hood having to beat down Little John to get him to join, taxing the local villages, hangings, hostages, marriage- which leads to rule 13.1- Bigamy Prohibition.

Plus I really like that it does all this in a very compact, rules-light package. It really shows that "theme" doesn't have to mean "1000 cards with tiny- font flavor text on them".

Definitely worth $25.

Superb example of theme in action. The mechanics are clearly based on the Robin Hood legend, and wouldn't fit almost anything else.

Great game - DO NOT confuse it with "Legends of Robin Hood", which sucks. The earlier "gamette" is totally different and far better.

Yeah, I hear LEGENDS is no good even though it's designed by Courtney Allen (UP FRONT, STORM OVER ARNHEM). Anybody have a conflicting viewpoint on it?

Just to be clear, that wasn't meant as some kind of "Search the forum, idiot!" post -- just wanted to point you to that other thread.

I didn't take it that way, so no worries. I usually try to do my due diligence so I don't waste people's time -- I was just in a hurry and couldn't recall if there was anything more about it. I appreciate that you pointed me to the other thred.

Knowing that it is worth the $25 is a lot of what I wanted to know. I am assuming that it is made strictly for two players -- is that correct?

As an aside, I noticed that Stephen Lawhead (who wrote the 5 book series around King Arthur, that wasn't half bad) has strated on one about Robin Hood. Has anyone read any of these?

Funny that this popped up today--I had it in my want lists in a math trade -- and wound up getting it for Hey That's My Fish. I've had my eye on it for a long time--going back to Barnes' review which first brought it to my attention.

Yeah, it's strictly a two-player game.
