Short version: You can be an obese asshat who smells of virginity and cheetoh, with a penchant for making children cry when you beat them, BUT DON’T HAVE A BEER

This guy OK, but a guy drinking a beer isn’t.

I made a kid cry in an M:tG tournament once. It was like a PTQ or States or something like that. Poor kid had a 90-card deck and just got ran over. However, I did make sure that I had bathed, so I had that going for me, which is nice.

Not sure what the issue is. They aren’t banning alcohol. Unless you think the majority of event organizers will decide to restrict alcohol.

Also, that Francis dude is a character and that video was staged.

I made a kid cry in an M:tG tournament once.

I got beaten by a little kid at a pre-release event once and my friends were more than happy to make fun of me.

I know that it was staged, but I've seen guys like that at MTG tournaments (well, not QUITE like that).

I misread it - my bad!

There is zero doubt in my mind that people like that exist.

Magic has been less fun ever since the tournaments started offering serious prize money:

I think the rule change is literally the exact opposite of that? That now, stores can choose to restrict ages at a tournament so that they can serve alcohol?

If i had to judge this thread, I would not be able to decide if Jeb or Josh won.

I think it’s Josh but MAN it’s close

I am honoring the original design!

407. Ante
407.1. Earlier versions of the Magic rules included an ante rule as a way of playing “for keeps.” Playing Magic games for ante is now considered an optional variation on the game, and it’s allowed only where it’s not forbidden by law or by other rules. Playing for ante is strictly forbidden under the Magic: The Gathering Tournament Rules (WPN.Wizards.com/en/resources/rules-documents).
407.2. When playing for ante, each player puts one random card from their deck into the ante zone after determining which player goes first but before players draw any cards. Cards in the ante zone may be examined by any player at any time. At the end of the game, the winner becomes the owner of all the cards in the ante zone.
407.3. A few cards have the text “Remove [this card] from your deck before playing if you’re not playing for ante.” These are the only cards that can add or remove cards from the ante zone or change a card’s owner. When not playing for ante, players can’t include these cards in their decks or sideboards, and these cards can’t be brought into the game from outside the game.
407.4. To ante an object is to put that object into the ante zone from whichever zone it’s currently in. The owner of an object is the only person who can ante that object.

I had a pretty strong Ante deck that used Darkpact and Demonic Attorney. Good old days when every deck was a speed deck!

Dude.

Contract From Below {B} Sorcery Ante a card. Discard your hand and draw seven cards. There has never been a more powerful MtG card.

Same. I've always loved ante, though I understand why its gone.

So I choose to honor it by going all meta and using the best card illustration made for M:tG; Quinton Hoover's 'Dark Pact' art in Wiz-War.

M:tG borrowed heavily from Wiz-War to become successful, so I figured I could get the best of both worlds by using their art assets, and give me a way to see that lovely bit of Art Nouveau on the table again in a real way after decades of absence.

Sidenote: The original of this piece sold a couple years ago on ebay, for over $15k. As a strong admirer of it, I can see why. The best part of the auction was the pics. Finally a clean high res version to appreciate it better than those old dark beta cards.

I could really go for a commander game using ante. Such a thing is very much in the spirit of the format.
