World Board Gaming Championship (WBC) - Aug 1 - 9

Let's get Ready to Rumble - August 1 - 9 is World Board Gaming Championship (WBC). The World Boardgaming Championships (WBC) takes place at the Lancaster Host Resort in Lancaster, Pa., every year during the first week of August. WBC is truly national—even international—in scope, with most of the union’s 50 states represented, in addition to gamers from Canada and farther afoot. Most of all, it is truly a gamer’s convention—run for boardgamers by boardgamers—with no middleman involvement. Something that makes WBC stand out is its tournaments. Long an afterthought elsewhere, tournaments are king at WBC. No convention has ever done them better than WBC (from the Website).

WBC is also one of the best Cons to play Old School Avalon Hill games since Avaloncon is at it's roots. Here's a sampling of the Ameritrash and Grogard gaming:

Axis and Allies - Thu Aug 6 - 7
Advanced Civilization - Wed - Thu, Aug 5 - 6
ASL - Thu, Aug 6
Britana - Tue and Thu
CAYLUS - Tue and Thu
Combat Commander - Wed and Fri Aug 5 and 7th
Command and Colors - Thu, Aug 6
Circus Maximum - Tue and Fri
Conflict of Heroes - Thurs and Fri, Aug 6 - 7
Dune - Wed - Thu, Aug 5 - 6
For the People - Thu - Fri
Here I Stand - Tue and Thurs
History of the World - Tue - Wed, Aug 4-5
Kingmaker - Wed - Thur
Memoirs 44 - Thu - Fri, Aug 6-7
Merchants of Venus - Wed - Fri, Aug 5-7
Monsters Ravage America - Wed - Sat, Aug 5-8
Nuke War - Sat, Aug 8
Napoleonic War - Wed - Thu, Aug 5 - 6
Paths of Glory - Mon Aug 3
Slapshot - Sat, Aug 8
Squad leader - Sat, Aug 8
Successors - Tues - Wed
Titan - Wed
TWILIGHT IMEPERIUM 3 - Thursday Aug 6. Malloc will GM and I'm Assistant GM. 9-10 demo, 10 - 4 first round and Finals are 5 - ???
Twilight Struggles - Fri
Wellington Wed - Thur
Warriors of God - Friday
War of the Ring - Sunday - Monday
Win, Place, Show - Tue and Sat

Pre-Cons:
Grogard Con - Aug 1 - 2
Hannibal - Aug 1 -2
Sampler Show Case - Including BSG Aug 3-4

Open Gaming every day. I'll set up the big Arkham Horror game Wed or Friday.

So anyone else going besides me and Malloc?

Tuesday - Auction

After my disappointing no show at Trashfest, I'm eyeing the WBC warily...

I already pretty much know that the weekend of the 8th and 9th is out and my time off is unlikely to exceed one day. That being said, I'd like to know who's gonna be there the first weekend (1st and 2nd), if anyone. I could come up Saturday, and stay through Monday afternoonish I think, but if I dont know anyone there, I'll probably skip it.

Anyone?

I see this "Sampler Show Case - Including BSG Aug 2-3" which sounds good to me, but most just open gaming I'm thinking.

I'm planning to be there Friday morning through Sunday noon. I'll likely be spending most of that time in the open gaming area if someone wants to sit down to a session or two.

I'm also trying to work a day trip to Historicon on July 18th at the same location. I was on the fence about it, but one of the session descriptions included the phrase "two drink minimum" at the end of it and that sealed the deal.

Sag.

I'm guessing that's the second weekend (8-9)?

Upon further investigation, it appears that the BSG stuff is on Tuesday August 4th.

2 drinks are required for anything I play at the WBC. For Ti3 we will be playing a 1 drink per action round rule. In addition, as part of the primary action of the political strategy card, the holder of the Voice of the Council can force people to do a shot with them as part of the ceremonial opening ritual of the council.

It's the World Championship after all, you will need to earn that title.

I will be there starting Monday to the end (I skip the pre cons).
TI3 is Thursday, but I think I will allow for early games since there are a lot of good games going on Thursday. Min 4 players for an early game and you need to find or call me and let me know whats up so I can give you the score sheets.

The Final will be Thursday night 5 pm start and it will be 8 players.

When I am not Mired in Ti3 stuff I will be in the open gaming area probably playing ti3, or Gangsters or anything really.

The website pretty much sucks. WBC's Website

I'm not exactly sure which days I'll be there. Thursday Aug 6th - Saturday Aug 8th for sure (I've booked a hotel room Thursday and Friday night). But I may come in earlier Tuesday or Wednesday. I only live about hour away so I may come up for the War of Ring Pre-con.

My buddy Stephen and I will arrive Wednesday evening.

On Thursday we'll be joining the TI3 tourney. Can't wait!

My buddy Larry joins us later on Thursday. He's reading the TI3 rules and we're looking to play it with 1-3 others on Friday or Saturday.

The three of us will be there through Sunday, primarily for open gaming.

Here are the games we're bringing along, multiplayer games and 2-player wargames:

Struggle of Empires
Battlestar Galactica
Fury of Dracula
Last Night on Earth
Galaxy Trucker
Nexus Ops
Betrayal at House on the Hill
War of the Ring
FAB: Bulge
Pacific Victory
Manoeuvre
Combat Commander
Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage
Hammer of the Scots
Warriors of God
Saratoga, Guilford, and Brandywine (from GMT's American Rev series)

If anyone's looking for open games of any of the above, let me know.

Chad

I just sent in my registration for Thursday to Sun. This is my first time to WBC and since I don't know what the hell I'm doing, I will probably just hang out in open gaming for a day or so. Do people usually plan out their tourneys? How do you prevent overlap with all of the games that a scheduled. Anyways, I hope to meet some of you in person.

ok, I have a question for all of the WBC veterans. What if I just want to play a particular scheduled game once (i.e. don't want to play the whole tournament for that game). Can I do this? If so, can I only do this for the first round? I'm really trying to figure this out but the WBC website really sucks.

On Thursday stop by the Twilight Imperium Room. Ti3 starts at 9:00 AM and will be going until about 4:00 AM. We may be deep into Ti3 but at least you can meet some of us.

On Friday and Saturday we'll be doing open gaming. I may print out some F:AT stickers to put on people's badges.

For tournments you can join in any heat as long as you get there on time to play. You can just play one heat if you'd like.
