July 1st (Canada day) was yesterday... can I give Canadian bands instead?

ah, that's right, no one cares.

ok ok... I'll do it.

Creedence Clearwater Revival, I agree with you there, for sure.
Ween
Mastadon (is it too early to pick them, I don't fuckin care)
The Coasters
Public Enemy

Tough, I tried to pick bands people know to make it less pretentious.. and I stayed with pop music too. These lists always require exscuses from me.

The first four, in no particular order:

REM
The Pixies
The Velvet Underground
Sonic Youth

Number five changes all the time. Right now I'm seriously digging Interpol. But it seems a shame not to have The Stooges somewhere on here. Maybe replace Sonic Youth.

On this site top Canadian bands list might look like this;

Death From Above 1979 (good choice Schweig!)
D.O.A.
Voivoid
SNFU
The Rheostatics

something like that, genre jumping a bit, it's not what I would pick but it looks like a FATie list to me.

I might go with

The Band
Neil Young and Crazy Horse
The Creaking Tree String Quartet
The Lenny Breau Trio
Anvil

Granted we're better at producing individual musicians and songwriters then we are at "bands".

Well, since it was bands and not just rock, you can't mess with

Glenn Miller Orchestra
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Beach Boys
Credence Clearwater Revival
Eagles

1. Alice Cooper
2. Bob Seger
3. The Eagles (Glenn Frey is from Michigan...not sure on the others)
4. Aretha Franklin
5. Madonna (Yes, yes, I do like her)

A couple of additions:

For American bands, gotta throw in some stupidly aggressive metal. Let's go with some Tampa action - Obituary.

For Canada, I have to mention Skinny Puppy, although there's probably little patriotic about them.

Hmm...looks like I did this wrong in my haste to get out. I was looking for bands that wear their love of things American on their sleeve. Not necessarily singing the star spangled banner or what not, but celebrate America. There were lots of good bands _from_ America y'all listed, but not necessarily what I was going for with the 4th of July theme.

Oh well...next time.
