Ok I have to admit I'm a Star Trek geek come lately. Up until last year I'd only scene about 12 complete episodes the Original Star Trek series. This year I watched most of the Original series. So now Netflix has added Next Generation and Voyager. I've watched 2 episodes of both series. I'm leaning towards watching Voyager next unless people can sway me differently. Personally, I kind of hated most of the characters on the love ship I mean in Next Generation and while I liked the first episodes of Voyager, I think Voyager lacks any sense of humor. Voyagers is more like BSG minus the sex, hot chicks and cylons.
It's hard for me to watch much from Season One of TNG because of the retreads, Wesley, and the clean shaven Riker, but other than that TNG gets my vote. And hopefully Netflix will get Deep Space Nine before you have to watch Voyager.
The problem is that the first two seasons of TNG suck. Hard. Plots and characters are pretty lame, with one or two exceptions. So if you're rating TNG vs. Voyager based on a couple episodes, it's easy to see why Voyager looks better; many of the mistakes made in the early seasons of TNG were mostly worked out by the time it came around. But in the long run, TNG is much better.
How is this even a consideration. PLEASE watch The Next Generation. How many seasons are on Netflix? The first two seasons of Next Generation (maybe the first three even) are REALLY bad compared to the rest of the seasons. The show really gets its footing then and seasons 4 through 6 are absolutely amazing, and season 7 isn't terrible.
Voyageur is a very empty series that gets worse and worse while TNG gets better and better. In Voyageur, the character with the most depth is a frickin' hologram. It's just not as well written and the characters are not where near the level of Data, Worf and Picard.
Plus, having a woman as a captain of a ship is REALLY pushing the fiction in science-fiction.
Please watch TNG and make sure to watch the first few seasons too (NO SKIPPING!). Getting through the first few seasons is the only way to appreciate characters like Troi later on. She becomes a much cooler character.
Stop in this thread every few episodes and let us know how it's going!
And Kes was way hotter than Seven of Nine. At least TNG has some really cool hot guest stars sometimes (although they're all attracted to Wil Wheaton for some reason, BLECH! He wouldn't even know what to do with them!)
btw, if Wesley is really bothering you in the first few seasons (or, let's be honest, the entire series), I found the trick to dealing with him is remembering tha the actor becomes a hard-core gamer later on in life. So, you know, oneofus oneofus oneofus, etc.
TNG all the way. Voyager is just tedious crap. The later seasons of TNG have some of the most memorable sci-fi stories ever. I grew up on TNG and I still have fond, fond memories of the show.
TNG all the way. As others have said, the first few seasons of TNG ane not very good. Once they worked out some kinks the show got so much better. Voyager on the other hand was a constant eyesore and a complete work of shite. It along with Enterprise were so awful that I was ok with never seeing another Star Trek show again in my life.
The INNER LIGHT still makes me cry, it's my favourite TNG episode. And DARMOK might be the best episode of Star Trek ever (including all the series put together). It's such a perfect episode.
My favorite TNG was the one where the Enterprise D comes through a wormhole and alters the timeline between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. There are some definite gems in TNG that can stand right up there with the best of the original series.
Yesterday's Enterprise. And it was the Enterprise C, silly. Yeah, that's a HUGE episode. The writers said that one caused a ton of headaches cuz it changed the timeline and a bunch of the Trek lore that they had to respect going forward, it set off a bunch of things and not just Tasha. What a cool episode.
I liked Guinan looking at Tasha funny the entire episode.
Both shows suck. Does it really matter which one sucks harder? Soap Opera in space. With babysitting. There really has not been much quality Sci-Fi on TV. The new Doctor Who is great. Battlestar started off great and then collapsed upon it's own weight. Same for X-Files. Twilight Zone is pretty consistently amazing and streams on Netflix.
Another voice preaching TNG over Voyageur. There's a reason why the former had a decent run in syndication ( and still can be seen on BBC America ) but the latter is mercifully nowhere to be found.

The season of Enterprise where the aliens attack Earth (can't remember their name, I think it was the third season) was pretty good. But by then the damage had already been done.
