I don't know what to think. I have never played the original, but it has a fairly low score on BGG (5.88, which basically means "it's shit"). Was it really that bad, or did it just come out at a bad time for Ameritrash titles in general?

Any thoughts?

I checked the comments and most people seem to think the core ideas were good but also that the game was unbalanced, the collectible factor was a pain and the rules were mediocre.

I found a fun nugget though:

"Suffers from a classic CCG problem - virtually every unit has a special ability."

That made me laugh!

Melee combat is deterministic. So it's mainly about maneuver (and range guessing).

I liked the Star Trek one "Red Alert" but didn't play it enough to see any balance problems.

It looks interesting, but it also looks a little bit gimmicky. It looks a little bit similar to Frontiers, which wasn't my cup of tea.

I'd like to try it, but I'm not sure about the whole "I flipped my pog onto your pog so you can't activate" bit.

The site doesn't show a full board setup... is this game competing with Dungeon Command? Because I'm all-in on Dungeon Command and don't need a competing game.

Nah, it's more free-form than Dungeon Command, there's no board. It's closer to a miniatures game I guess. I played the Star Trek one for a while, it was OK but I think it'd be very dated today. I'm guessing they've done some redevelopment on it, it certainly needs it.

This is a strange product to me. Warhammer, one of the most successful brands in the hobby affixed to Diskwars, a failed and now obscure brand. Warhammer is already a miniatures game, and Invasion is already a CCG-style product. I'm not sure what purpose this game fulfills.

It does seem like a weird juxtaposition, like a worker placement car race game .

Hello from a long time lurker.

While I'm surprised by the news I'm actually quite fond of the old Diskwars game and quite happy to see it revived. However it seems a bit strange that FFG rereleases BattleLore at the same time which could be considered a direct competitor, although Warhammer: Diskwars will probably emphasize the aspects of customizing armies. After looking at a preview from Drive Thru Review it even seems like they took the concept of command cards from BattleLore.

I expect it to become a relatively cheap, short battle game that emphasizes maneuvering and allows for customizing your armies. Which is a niche that Summoner Wars currently fills, although it is not really cheap here in Europe. The Warhammer franchise may help it, although I don't expect a lot of Warhammer Fantasy players to adopt this game, since it basically is the same as the miniatures games from a gameplay perspective. So we'll have to wait and see if it will be successful in the long run. From a business perspective it may actually be more likely to succeed than BattleLore, considering the low production costs.

It's a cheap skirmish miniatures game in WHFB setting. $40 for 60 disks and all you need to play in a box.

It's pretty smart actually. They're not allowed to make GW miniatures in 28mm, so they make this one. WHFB is a mass battle game, and this is more like a skirmish game. WHFB is bloody expensive, this one is dirt cheap. There's definitely a niche there.

The old version suffered from some horrifically unbalanced units. The Deadlands version was slightly better. Interested to see how the basic system is updated. I suppose this is FFG's way to make a miniature game without having a license to make WH miniatures (like using busts for Relic)?

I got some of these from someone (maybe even Brewmiester) in a trade and it got played a little. Didn't seem to odd, and there's a fairly sizeable yahoo group I found that helped me get a grip on the intricacies.

Fun game, but a little simple.

It's been a couple of weeks since I played, but I'd guess it took an hour, plus some rules since it was the first game. That was 2 players.

I like the game and will likely buy more armies.
