I'm thinking about Dragon Dice

So I'm kind of thinking about getting into Dragon Dice. I was strangely drawn to it when it first came out in 1995 but kind of balked at it, especially when I saw it on so many comic store discount tables. But the other day while thinking about Roll Through the Ages I realized how much I like dice games.

So I'm thinking about picking up some starter sets or seeing about trading for some. I'm afraid I don't have much to offer but I do have:

Star Wars Starship Battles
A few Chaotic cards
D20 Modern RPG Books (core rule book, the monster manual, the weapons locker and the dark matter campaign book)
Lego Star Wars I and II for PC
Battle for Middle Earth 2 for PC
World of Warcraft

I don't have any to trade, but you should definitely try it out...the neat thing is that it really is a dice game first and foremost.

Those two-race starters that SFG came out with a couple of years ago are a good way to get into it. If you like it, buy a lot on eBay.

That TTA dice game is actually a lot of fun. It's extremely simple, has absolutely nothing to do with TTA, and actually has a good bit of CIVILIZATION flavor to it.

The rumor is that the designer of Roll Through the Ages wanted to make a dice version of Francis Tresham's Civilization. However when he presented it to the guys at Eagle Games they liked it a lot but decided to rename it. Most likely due to licensing issues I'm sure. I'm glad to hear that its fun. I've been considering getting it.

Bulwyf, the designer confirmed that, so its not even a rumor anymore.

Dragon Dice is a blast, I used to play the hell out of it when it first came out. The original rules had some balance problems, but apparently there has been a reset button by whoever is putting it out now.

There should be more games in the world with custom dice like that...

Pick up 2 or 3 of the same starter set and you'll be good to get started. Download all the player aids on that other gaming website. It's a great game which will be making an appearance at the next meeting of our gaming secret society...

What I find funny is that we have users who joined within the past two weeks who have a higher post count that F:AT co-founder, Robert Martin.

Glad you could join us there, Rob!

I prefer to pull the strings from behind the curtain. Michael Barnes has been the target of my mind-control experiments for quite some time now.

This explains so much.

Man, I played the hell out of Dragon Dice when it first came out and through the first two or three kicker packs. It had some great things going on, but it ended up being too much of a mess for most players, I guess.

When DD began to fall off the radar, it did so very quickly, it seemed to me.

It's a great game that I still keep around and play. I'm especially waiting for my son to be old enough to play it since it involves throwing lots of dice and we can work on his counting skills together at the same time. It will always hold a special place in my heart as well because I actually got to run demos of it for TSR at GenCon 96 in Milwaukee (where I got to meet Ed Greenwood, a hero of mine at the time).

The demise of Dragon Dice can be traced to the near-end of TSR. The last 2 expansions they put out (Frostwings and the one before that) had horrible distribution because of that and the game had no momentum after the first year or two. Apparently SFR thought there was money in it because they bought the rights and have been selling it online and at GenCon every year so far.

Do any retailers sell it or do I need to buy through them?

The upside of buying from them is that they have EVERYTHING in their store - pretty much every die ever created you can buy from them. I'm not sure what retailers sell it. I bought it from MB back when he was in the bidness, and then I bought from SFR when I wanted the Undead (which you can't seem to get anywhere else).

So will we be seeing a Roll Through the Ages review coming up soon?
