I know what you mean, but it makes me smile whenever someone says this.In descent you CAN be a wizard and go using a broadsword, but you won't be very effective (much more like real life).

I played a lot of D&D during high school and college, so I was ready to enjoy Descent. And I still think that the specialized dice are a cool idea. But after actually playing Descent just once, I lost all interest.
The first hour was definitely fun, but by the second hour, the combat was getting boring. There are tactical decisions to be made, but they are pretty simple ones. At the three hour mark, I couldn't wait for the game to end, even though I have enjoyed other games that lasted six hours or more. And when my character got killed, I was very disappointed at how meaningless it was. Death in Descent is like a cross between a trip to the penalty box and a trip to the mall.
I realize that Doom is basically the same game, but I enjoyed it more because the game was shorter and the odds were more challenging.

Descent is easily one of best games to be released in the last 10 years. It has taken many good ideas from other games and combined them into a well thought out and interesting system.
The game length problem stems from the numerous tactical choices that need to be made each round. With the wrong people the downtime can get annoying. There's also quite bit of minutiae to keep track of. After a few plays though, the game really comes into its own because everyone is familiar enough with their choices to really make informed descisions on how to react to encounters. Also the suppliments keep getting devishly more sophisticated. Anyone playing the "Indiana Jones" adventure knows exactly what I mean...
