So I hadn't bought a new game for about 2-3 months. And what do I buy? Triumph of Chaos, the insanely overchromed Russian Revolution game.

I think there's something really wrong with me.

How long before that one hits the table with a live person?

It looks awesome, but I haven't been able to justify buying another wargame that will invariably be doomed to solo play...yet...

It's a CDG so it should be reasonably well suited to PBEM. Or so I hear. And hope...

But I play way too much PBEM already... thankfully I do have a regular wargaming partner I play with, but it'd probably be too much to ask to play TOC. We usually play POG, TS, FAB: Bulge...

Or I may have to *really* nerd it up and get a mic and play it live VASSAL. But that's a bridge I'm not dying to cross, sitting on the interwebs with some dude across the country hunched over your computer, talking into a fucking mic...

I hear you. I really like VASL by email, but I don't care much about talking to a mic during play.

Did you get it with the "Comrade's Guide" for $99 (90th anniversary special)?

Well if you are going to play something live on VASSAL, having voice chat is infinitely preferable to typing messages, I assure you. Granted I've only played this way with my brothers and good friends out of state--so I can understand how doing this with a stranger might make you feel like a loser.

I got a cheapo $10 Plantronics headset with microphone and it's been terrific value.

Gary,

There is nothing wrong with you - I bought this game a year ago (at the vastly inflated UK price), read the rules, put it on the shelf unpunched, waited for and bought the Comrade's Guide when it came out, read it, put it in the box and put the box back on the shelf....

I think there's something wrong with me!

The game does look awesome - maybe someday.

I just punched it out. Maybe I'll *try* to solo it but I think I'll get online with it soon. I am totally in love with the idea though--it's basically a 3 player wargame where the 3rd player is the system. I value narrative and flavor way more than I do any "I LOST BECAUSE OF A DICE ROLL!" considerations so this is like super attractive to me.

Gotta love any game with a counter for control of a huge train full of gold.

You also get red and white beads instead of chits to show control of spaces - maybe that'll clinch it!

Nothing is wrong with either of you.

When AH announced they were sold to Hasbro, there was a run on AH games at my FLGS (at the time there was only one I went to). Among the titles I snatched up:

Machiavelli
Diplomacy (played it e-mail for ages, but never owned it)
D-Day
Empires in Arms

Do you know how many of them I've actually played? Zero. (Okay, Dip, but that's still e-mail.) And I still regret not picking up Guadalcanal, too.

Just from soloing and getting the rules internalized, the best way I can describe this game is that it's like sitting at a table playing a serious, incredibly complex and overchromed wargame while a drunk guy stands next to the table picking different colored units from a bag and throwing them on the table while yelling out which player gets to use them.

And I think I mean that in a good way...

I can certainly understand not buying games in the past couple months. I buy alot of games (not nearly as many as some) and I get tired of buying games that I'll never play. So I do quite a bit of research before I buy a new game. 'sides, I just plunked down a nice bit of change on a new TV....
