I'm with Shellhead and Mr. Skeletor -- Settlers is quite overrated. For fuck's sake, it isn't the best board game of "our" time. It isn't really that innovative or that enjoyable when stacked up to many current games.

It gets its kudos because it came out at a time when it was all alone. Hell, it isn't even the best game of the mid to late 90s. Better games would be

1. Paths of Glory
2. Hannibal
3. Warhammer Quest
4. Mississippi Queen
5. Twilight Imperium
6. Joan of Arc

I'd still go with Settlers overall (with expansions).

Wank wank wank

I think the only reason Kingsburg hasn't reached the mass market is the name. I would have named it 'iSettlers 2.0' in a clever marketing move to appeal to the tech savvy Gen Y kids.

Settlers: brilliant, innovative (still), very interactive, classic, the best all-around board game of our time

It's going to fall off of BGG's top 50 in less than a year, so even the Euro crowd there doesn't agree with you.

The Settler's love fest is a bit much. If BSG, Space Hulk, Chaos in the Old World, Arkham Horror and Settlers were on 5 different tables, how many of you would actually sit down at the settlers table.

If you said "ME!" I'm calling you a wanker in advance.

I wouldn't sit down at the Settlers table, but that's because I've played that game more then enough times for the near future. We used to get in at least 3 games a week. And that was for like a solid 2 years.

Yeah sure, there are other games I'd choose to play over Settlers now, but the thing is, I wouldn't have any interest in any of those games if it wasn't for Settlers getting me back into the board game hobby in such a huge way. I had played a lot of Axis & Allies and Samurai Swords and Illuminati:NWO years before, but got away from board gaming in favor of PC games for a long time after that. But after several people telling me about this Settlers game, which sounded lame to me when they'd describe it, I finally tried it in 2007... Settlers was really a revelation at that point, and I think it still has the same huge kind of impact on so many other people when they first play it. In terms of its unique design and its impact and long-term influence and appeal, I think it will be the most significant board game of our time.

And yeah, it'll probably slip out of the top 50 on TOS, which is ridiculous, but considering I never cared much for Agricola, Puerto Rico or Power Grid, which are the #1-3 on there, then obviously I don't care about that. It's a cult of the new thing, and people there don't really seem to have a good sense of perspective... 50 years from now, I think Settlers of Catan will still be important and still be played and discovered anew by many. Those others will be pretty much forgotten, I predict.
