So in my book base Settlers is good for teaching, but once that's done it's time to move on to C&K.

I've seen the highs and lows of both the base game and C&K.
C&K couldn't have been if it had been fo rthe appeal of the base game
I wouldn't have played as many games if there only had been the base game.

Incredibly tough choice, but if left to themselves, the base game is the more polite and will excuse itself

C&K remains

For me the simplicity of Settlers is one of its great strengths. I haven't played Cities and Knights all that much, but it definitely feels to me like a game reaching for something a little deeper in terms of civilization building but still firmly enough grounded in the simplicity of basic Settlers that it doesn't quite get there.

I say Basic Settlers.

the base game got me into hobby games, but C&K made me a geek.

Vote: C&K

It might be a bit late, but I also prefer the game with Cities and Knights. Tough choice though, because I do love the base game more as the years go on.
