Battleground Fantasy Warfare

Over the weekend, I found myself toying around with making a point system for Battlelore, and we really had fun with it, as limited as it was. I realized that I was well on my way to really going down the Games Workshop path, but I just watched Tom Vasel's top 100 countdown and saw Battleground Fantasy Warfare and realized this might work for me.

Can anybody who has played the game sound off for me?

It's a great way to get into minis without risking not liking minis. Up against other minis games I personally have a hard time not having minis cause there is something so appealing to me about lots of little toys.

It does have some pretty good, though fairly simple rules. I love the writing orders on the cards bit, really interesting way of handling stuff.

Pick up a couple decks and see if you dig it, if not then you at the least have a much better idea of if you like minis games but don't like BGFW or if you just don't like minis games in general.

Another cheap option would be D&D minis, since you can get loads of common dudes for really cheap and give the game a whirl. That one is gridded though so I dunno if it would scratch the same itch for you.

It's not bad at all, there are a lot of value propositions going on in it that make it fairly attractive. It is a miniatures game, no doubt. It has a fairly simple, clean system that pulls in some elements of WHFB but with about 200% less clutter and rules burden. And no rulers. You can literally play the game with just a deck of cards and a couple of dice. You can put the cards in sleeve protectors and do all the stat tracking and whatnot with a dry erase.

It's WAY more satisfying and detailed than BATTLELORE, I'll tell you that. There's some good variety in the units and between the races and it's entirely possible to mix and match to come up with your own army builds.

I sold mine some time ago, but if I ever get a hankering for this kind of game it's a good option.

I'll tell you straight up, I didn't like it. All the units move and attack following some basic AI, and for the most part, you just watch the game being played out in front of you. Well yes, you have a limited ability to interrupt the AI, and you can play cards from your hand to affect the outcome of the battle. But still, too much automated overhead and not a lot of play.

(Just so you know where I'm coming from, I enjoy the gameplay on more 'normal' minis games like Heroscape and Warmachine)

I can sell you my cards if you want though. :D
