Are Painting Groups a thing?

Like gathering with friends/strangers and working on painting your minis while together in the same room? Or is painting minis more of a solitary thing for most people?

I don't have a painting group, but if I did, I would call it Children of Duncan.

Sounds like a good idea. You should start one.
I always paint with my family and occasionally a friend. It's fun.

I know at least 1 painting group locally. But I always paint alone.

I once tried to con my wife into helping me paint my 150 goblins. She painted a few but wasn't really into it, probably because most of the GW stuff I own is firmly in the appeals-to-13-year-old-boys category. It was nice to have someone to jaw with though.

One of the shops around here used to have a big old table with all sorts of paints and brushes that would regularly have 2 or 3 dudes hanging out at. I'm not sure what the terms were, but other stores I've heard about charge like a flat fee or make you buy some paint to add to the collection. This store has changed ownership and I don't live as close to it, so I'm not sure if that's a really sustainable business model or if it was something the hobbyist owner had to push people to paint.

Nowadays I generally paint by myself at my computer desk and have something like YouTube on in the background.

There is a Warhammer group locally that has a craft/hobby night to paint. I normally paint solitary at home though.

We've had occasional painting parties. A bunch of people come over and e all paint mini's. Some snacks, low volume tv/music, and some conversation to help break the silence. It's nice.

My wife and I painted the Ravenloft and Ashardalon sets. Imagine her surprise when I sold them
