Mad Dog wrote: War of the Worlds - The one with Tom Cruise in it. I liked the special effects. That's all.

That scene where they're in the van slowly wading into the crowd is tense as hell.

The Losers was a disappointing movie. Based on a decent Vertigo mini-series, it's about some special military operatives who are betrayed and forced to go on the run. The cast holds some promise, including Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, and Chris Evans basically playing Owen Wilson. The action is lively and there is some decent humor, but the story doesn't hold together through all the rapid transitions from city to city. The final scene during the credits is unexpected and fun. If you have nothing better to do, The Losers is an okay way to pass time, at least if you are an action movie fan. I would rate it somewhat higher than either of The Expendables movies.

i don't want to hear anymore positive comments about the War of the Worlds remake.

How frickin' tall was that tree in the last shot?

Oh, I also thought that crashed airplane set was pretty cool. I was in awe when I saw it in person at Hollywood Studios in LA a few years ago.

Mad Dog wrote: Wild - Completely by-the-numbers Oscar bait. Reese Witherspoon suffers much hardship by carrying a heavy pack and even breaks a nail. Also, all men are pigs.

Huh? I can see the Oscar-bait comment, but the "hardships" are just superficial dressing for her spiritual journey. And I didn't get "all men are pigs" from it at ALL. Just because it was pro-woman doesn't mean it was anti-man.*

*Anti-Man, a little-known character from the now defunct Charlton Comics line, will make his debut on the CW this fall, starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Dakota Fanning.

Yeah, I didn't get man hating from it. Book is much better, I think it was a difficult film to make since most of the book is (pretty compelling) internal monologue.

I was going to debate this, but really the movie isn't worth it. As soon as Oscar season passes I doubt I'll even remember it or hear about it again.

I watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Great performances, although the movie is a slow burn, so don't expect edge of your seat.

Watched Nightcrawler last night and really enjoyed it. Gyllenhaal was excellent as a creep and the pace was pretty good. Not quite sure what would happen next.

Into the Woods - Not much into musicals, but I do like alternate fairy tales. Between this and Edge of Tomorrow I'm going to end up an Emily Blunt fan. Already like several other actors here. Had some funny moments and the story was okay, but I thought the sets were all surprisingly bland. Maybe to emulate a stage performance if I had to guess.

Parts of that movie had me seriously on edge, like the mansion scene.

Force Majeure is pretty interesting. It was described as a family surviving an avalanche at a ski resort, and it is exactly that, but not the way you expect. Reminded me of Kubrick in style and tone, and also a little bit like Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise. It resolves in a very touching way, but then the actual ending scene is kind of odd, but also fitting as a final character moment.

It felt gross to do it, but we paid money to go see Furious 7. It was just as we were expecting: 100% over the top ridiculousness. It basically followed in the grand tradition of the previous two. There's not much more to say about it.

I don't think anyone should apologize for liking the fast and furious series.

i actually heard the latest Furious is totally decent, like actually good.

I probably won't see it but I was surprised to see that. I'm glad they're not Transformers-level garbage
