My birthday mistake: getting a Droid

My wife and I went to the Verizon store to get an iphone4s. The sales guy convinced us to get a Droid because it was the same, had the same number of apps and had double the available space (4 gigs instead of 2). It is also on 4G NETWORK. He described 3G as a dying network blah blah blah.

As you guys probably know, it is a downright LIE about the number of apps being the same. My wife and I went back to the store and called the sales guy on it and got an iphone 4s.

I checked for Ascension, Neuroshima Hex and a couple more apps on the Droid with no luck. Sales guy tried to convince us more apps were coming for the Droid; at that point we were not listening any more.

My god am I digging Ascension. I have not been able to download Neuroshima Hex yet because apparently the file is too big and I need Wi-fi to download it?

I don't even know what to say to this.

EDIT: Oh wait, yes I do.

Yeah, I had the same problem with Garage Band. Files that are really big (over 50MB) require a wifi connection. If you have a wireless router at home, use that. If not, connect at any McDonalds or Starbucks.

Problem solved.

And download Disc Drivin. It's free, or 99 cents. I prefer the latter. It's Pitchcar but better...you can play it from across the country.

I hear you, Dave. I love my Kindle Fire for reading, but it's worth fuck all otherwise.

I absolutely love my Android phone.

But then again I already own an iPad. If I didn't, I'd think the 'droid sucked donkey cock.

There are in fact roughly the same number of apps available for both phones. The big difference is that the Android store doesn't have a quality control gateway and most of them are awful. On the plus side, there's a fair number of good freeware ones from the open source community that aren't available on iOS, and most of the favourite iOS apps are also available on Android, often slightly cheaper.

But for board games, Apple still rules the roost.

I will agree that if want a phone for an app platform over being a phone and portable web browser, the Iphone is the way t go. I got a Droid X 17 months ago with the promise of an improved suite of apps. I am STILL waiting for Neuroshima Hex. The problem is that with the huge variety of Android platforms, screen sizes, and OS out there, developers will find it easier and more profitable to write apps for Apple.

The reason the sales guy pushed the Android is that all phones prices are heavily subsidized by the carriers, but Iphones are the lowest profit margins for them:

www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/are-iphone-...destroying-carriers/

Bottom line, they make more money on Android phones.

That said, when I can upgrade my current phone, I am sticking with Android. Now that I am used to the increased screen size, I could never go to the much smaller Apple screen. I am used to having mulitple buttons ( BACK button anyone? ) and the version of Google maps on an Android device is better than the detuned one on Apple devices. I use Maps a lot when driving.

Yeah, my droid is so much more useful for wht I use it for than the iPwn. But then again, I don't use it to play games.

Wife has Droid and runs her business off it. I use my Iphone 2 days in and I'm already wishing I'd have had it for years.

The communications side is better than Droid, and the implementation of the features is better. And it's EASIER.

I don't like her phone, and as someone who just got that Iphone last week, I have to say that it beats the living shit out of my HTC Windows Phone 7, and I think it's better than the Droid.

Only thing that IPhone doesn't have that it REALLY needs: Slide out keyboard.

For me, Android's Swype makes up for any lack of apps. Absolutely love it, and would have a hard time going to tapping keys on a phone to type.

If my wife liked the Droid at all, we were going to simply switch. She didn't want the apps I do. However, after two minutes, she realized she preferred the iphone much more. We figured the Droid makes them more money. Oh, well.

What upset me the most (and the most Zohan-ish of all) is the sales rep never gave me a reciept. I made damn sure we got back to the store ASAP. If we couldn't make the exchange, I was wondering if it would be something to contact BBB or consumer affairs over. Thankfully, it did not come to that.

What exactly does this mean? You can't be referring to hard drive capacity.

Did he ever mention LTE in his little 4G pitch? I'm just curious how bad they are screwing people over with misinformation.

Umm. Amount of storage space is 16 GB for the LOW-END iPhone 4S. I have the middle of the road one - 32 GB.

Yeah, 16 GB is the minimum (3GS and later anyway) when they are released. After a year or two when they start offering them at a huge discount (or free), they get 8GB models, but that's the lowest.
