I love the BBC mini-series I, Claudius . (The book is also quite good but relatively dry.) The history of the Roman court -- from the rule of Augustus to the unlikely reign of Claudius -- is portrayed as a constant battle of wits and will, in which marriage is a strategic powerplay and a brother's death creates career opportunities. There is no more desirous or unenviable position than to be the heir to the emperor.

In the Shadow of the Emperor, which takes place in Germany during the Middle Ages, artfully recreates this treacherous struggle for rule... a struggle that can last for generations. However, though there are many clever connections between the theme and mechanics, it is hardly a flawless integration.
