Resourceful Components

I think the most common form of resources in games...

Over the years, I've played many games where you produce and have to manage resources of one kind or another. These can range from traditional things such as coal and ore or wheat and sheep to money, gems, energy or similar. Different games represent resources differently, so in this article, I want to look at what you might come across when you play a resource management game.

Another great article. My go to game for showing how nice components can be is Stone Age. Between the food tokens using size and images to reflect value to the wood, stone, gold pieces, it is a pleasure to play. A nice heap of stuff in front of you lures some players into hoarding resources in a way I dobt think they would if it was just some cards. Playing with them keeps the ADHD prone at the table as well :p

My least favorite way to track resources is some dull boring track, or worse, a FFG style wheel counter. ANYTHING is better than that! Using a die as a tracker is nice but often prone to getting bumped to another number "by accident" :p

Thank you Jason. I don't mind wheel counter per se, but yes, anything else is nicer.

Always paper cash over poker chips for me. And I think 'FFG-type wheels' are a great way to track stuff, I was actually going to mention the dials used in Rune Wars as soon as I read your article especially as they also track what units become available to you at different resource levels.
