To my surprise, their attempt to euroize the genre did...

Mindclash’s new space 4x by designers Nigel Buckle and Dávid Turczi is full of ideas, stemming from a stated goal to euroize the decision making in the galactic empire 4x genre.

Good review. I knew this game wasn't for me when my eyes started glazing over reading your forum updates on your progress in it. And I like complicated stuff like John Company and Siege of Jerusalem and whatnot. But it just sounds like it's so weighted down systemically that it arcs too much into the puzzle game realm for me, which I'm just not a fan of.

Yeah, definitely. Not a wide audience for this sort of thing here at TWBG, though the combat is not as toothless as I thought it was going to be when they did the campaign.

This is a good review but I also want to call out how the editing provided by TWBG (I'm presuming Jackwraith but IDK) really improved it compared to your earlier post on BGG (which was already quite good)!

No further thoughts on the game, everyone on the forums already knows what I think. I think 4/5 is about where I'd place it too but there's something popcorn-like about my plays which always leaves me wanting another piece.

Is there a map or a board with geometry, or are the tiles in that photo just places for action options to occur?

Oh, and do you shoot at each other, or a playerless enemy?

Any editing work was GS's alone. They don't pay me enough around here for that.

The competitive mode is where you can fight your opponents and there is an NPC enemy that invades all players at the end of the turn in that mode too. You definitely shoot at each other, and about half the techs greatly affect the strength of both your shooting at each other and at the NPC enemy.

There is also a solo/co-op mode which I discussed in the review as well which only has the NPC enemy that you are collectively scoring against and it is more active than in competitive and, unsatisfyingly, pops up a "bad" card every turn you need to figure out how to fulfill or else the next war the NPC engages with you will be stronger.

There is geography, yes. If you look at the first TTS photo it has a TI:4 style hexagonal map of sector tiles with fleets on them (plastic models), space stations (triangles), and infrastructure (the gears). The tiles also have population of the sector (the little dice are population indicators). The non-first scenarios, my in-play picture is of the first scenario, have different types of sectors with a variety of non-default qualities---survivor colonies, research station, gaia world, etc etc that give texture to the board and make some spaces more valuable than others.
