Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)
Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.
This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.
Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;
Two games enter! One game leaves!

Still, I'm happy with either of these games winning. They're both great, important, and iconic.

Quite an impressive turnout. This 'dome made me really want to try Magic again (only drafting this time), so much that I'm considering buying a bunch of commons if I can find some for CHEEP.
If you wanna try out Magic easy and cheap with friends who are turned off by deck building and since you're pool is limited you may not be able to make and tune 4 or 5 decks - you can try this:
Take a stack of Magic cards (no basic lands).
Shuffle up good.
This is the communal deck. Ditto communal graveyard.
Anything in your hand can be played as a land that produces mana of whatever color the card is.
Play on!
You get some of the gameplay down and get a Magic fix with little investment in time/money/energy (for you AND them).

Sounds cool, but think I'd prefer some kind of draft that allows me to tune my deck a little. Winston draft sounds great, and that "spells as lands" variant sounds great, too. I've read about it elsewhere and considered trying it out next time I play; my brother used to play Magic but says basic lands is the one thing he doesn't like about the game.Aarontu wrote:

I used to play Magic back in the 90's, then I gave away all my cards, and now I'm interested in playing it again, but only with drafting or other "non-collectible" formats. Drafting from a big pile of commons sounds like a lot of fun to me.

Oh absolutely - never done Winston, but I'd love to try it out. Drafting was always my most favorite style of playing. You got deck building, meta game, tight play all for a low cost to all. Great stuff! Drafting tested your SKILL as player and not always your wallet size.

I was reminded once again why Cosmic Encounter is my 2nd favorite game of all time. We had a kickass 5-player game, full of laughs and a lot of negotiation and backstabbing and alliances and strategizing. All in 45 minutes. Magic doesn't quite cut that. It's awesome for 2 really super competitive players, but I'm not that person anymore.
It's a bit too late, and it won't change anything, but just for the record, I'm changing my vote to Cosmic Encounter.
