Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Trashdome: Parker Brother vs. Milton Bradley

I looked over the ones I own or have played (and a couple that I still want (Astron and Escape from Colditz). Here is the list :

Milton Bradley:

007 (fun game)
Above the Clouds (early race game played with my grandmother)
Aggravation (family favorite at holidays)
Axis & Allies (AT Classic)
Barnabis Collins Dark Shadows Game (Ridiculous game where you build a skeleton...cool, it came with vampire teeth)
Battle Masters (AT Kids Classic)
Battle-Cry (First Wargame I remember playing)
Battleball (Highly underrated game)
Battleship (Classic)
Broadsides and Boarding Parties (AT Classic)
Candyland (Classic)
Carrier Strike! (Just an awesome game...loved this as a kid)
Concentration (classic)
Connect Four (Classic)
Conquest of the Empire (Part of the Gamemasters Series)
Conspiracy (A nice little pick-up deliver/bluffing game)
Crack the Case (A great, but sometimes ridiculuous, deduction game)
Crossfire (We played the hell out of this as kids)
Dark Tower (No explanation needed)
The Fastest Gun (A cool little 3D game simulating gunfights)
Fireball Island (AT Kids Classic)
Fortress America (Obviously)
Game of Life (Classic)
HeroQuest and Expansions (Obvious)
Heroscape (I'm not a fan, but a juggernaut nonetheless)
Hi-Ho Cherrio (Classic)
Intrigue (Clue-esque game about murder on a ship -- not bad really)
King Oil (Another highly underrated game)
Mouse Trap (Kids Classic)
Omega Virus (More electronic fun)
Real Ghostbusters Game (Our version of mousetrap growing up)
Samurai Swords (Obvious)
Space Crusade (Obvious)
Star Wars: Epic Duels (Obvious)
Stratego (Classic)
Thunder Road (Obvious)
Why (Alfred Hitchcock based murder/mystery game -- also could play their rethemed Columbo game)

Parker Brothers:

Astron (Only played once, but was really cool)
Beggars and Thieves (A pretty cool trick taking game)
Boggle (Classic)
Bumper Cars (Kids game...played a ton as a kid)
Can't Stop (Just fun)
Careers (Most underrated mainstream game there is)
Dinosaur Island (A decent roll and move with a little bit of screw you for your opponents)
Diplomacy
Dog Fight (A pretty cool old game...played a few times with my Uncle)
Escape from Atlantis/Survive! (Obvious)
Escape from Colditz (This and Astron are really the only two out of print games that I am looking for)
Fun City (Just a fun game...loved the clock and the SLOG as a kid)
Game of Oil (I don't like it as much as King Oil, but it isn't a bad economic simulation game)
Have Gun Will Travel (A pretty good roll and move game with a unique early way of fighting)
Lionheart (Not bad 2 player game...good for kids)
Lost Gold (A unique deduction game with electronics and magnets)
Mille Bournes (aka Touring....played this a ton with my grandmother)
Monopoly (Classic)
Pit (Classic)
Prisoner of Zenda (A decent, old strategy game)
Risk (Classic)
Scrabble (Classic)
Shadowlord! (Weird game -- I always liked it)
Sorry! (Classic)
Star Wars: Escape from the Death Star (Played this with my cousins growing up...always a good time)
Star Wars: Battle at Sarlacc's Pit (fun game for kids...not so great as an adult)
Stop Thief (Classic electronic game...along the lines of Dark Tower for me)
Tiddledy Winks (Classic)
Trivial Pursuit (Classic)
Yahtzee (Classic)

I thought I would go with Parker Brothers just because of their influence and the ability to have so many classic games. You could discount HeroQuest as really being a Warhammer Game and I don't include Dungeon or D&D Fantasy Boardgame as the former was originally by TSR (I think) and the latter was really after Hasbro subsumed PB. Now, if I were to pick a game off of either of these lists, it would likely be from MB.

Smess: The Ninny's Chess is the best version. The plastics are surreal, and the day-glo board is so gloriously 60's faux psychedelic.
Are you sure MB did a version of Take the Brain? PB published it twice (as All the King's Men the second round.)

That said, you earn my complete admiration by mentioning Bantu. I was going to, but figured that it would mean NOTHING to anyone here. Bantu is a vicious 4-player diceless Backgammon-like game. Pure abstract, a really good game, and with some nice (if sparse) 50's tiki art on the box and board.

Parker, Waddington's, and House of Games (Canada) did license each other's games a lot. I think Formula One was a Waddington game first. Sadly, we didn't get some of the best Waddington games (Buccaneer, Mine a Million, and Blast Off.)

Take the Brain has the same neon look. As far as I know, the only change is the name, Smess for the US and TtB for the UK.

" Are you sure MB did a version of Take the Brain? PB published it twice (as All the King's Men the second round.)"
Not entirely sure, but a quick search disclosed a Game Cabinet page saying All The Kings Men was published by MB. But it's not exactly phrased with certainty.

" That said, you earn my complete admiration by mentioning Bantu. I was going to, but figured that it would mean NOTHING to anyone here. Bantu is a vicious 4-player diceless Backgammon-like game. Pure abstract, a really good game, and with some nice (if sparse) 50's tiki art on the box and board."
Well, I have some fairly obscure games here, though perhaps not as many as you. ;) I'd always wanted to get hold of a copy, bought the Parker version only to see a Summit Games one about a week or so later at a really good price. So I bought it as well... Did you know that there's a slight difference between the two boards? They changed one connection if I remember rightly. It's an excellent abstract and I think the minimal African style art made it distinctive. Haven't played it for ages though, if we ever get up to four players when I'm hosting...

" Parker, Waddington's, and House of Games (Canada) did license each other's games a lot. I think Formula One was a Waddington game first. Sadly, we didn't get some of the best Waddington games (Buccaneer, Mine a Million, and Blast Off.)"
I still have my childhood copies of Buccaneer and Blast Off, probably in the attic. Mine a Million I only bought a few years ago when a charity shop had a mint copy. And since you mention Waddington's, being English, I should . . .
VOTE: Waddington's!

EDIT- Waddington's reminds me of another worthy Parker game not yet mentioned: Kimbo.

I love some of the Parker Brothers games...but I gotta come down on the side of MB, for sure. If given a choice to play with games from either company for the rest of my life -- and that was the only choice...I'd have to go with MB.

VOTE: MB

Parker Brothers oops, Milton Bradley (as pointed out below I made a boo boo) on the strength of Fireball Island alone (although I think Stratego pushed it over the edge). My favorite game ever!

I love the gamemaster series, but really, I still play Fireball Island and Stratego AND I have awesome nostalgia filled memories of them.

Mattel? They had a pretty crap game division from memory.

I thought MB did fireball island? Tornado Rex was Parker Bros version of that game.
