Honestly, this is the most jarring thing when looking at people's painted armies. The actual skill involved boils down to what you describe, any level of skill looks great on the tabletop. Then there are the armies that have absolutely terrible schemes, the actual skill involved is overshadowed by the actual colors selected. That jumps out way more than an errant brushstroke.

Of course, I am not arguing for studio-only schemes as I have seen plenty of out there color choices that still work.

I love the part in Peachy’s color theory video where he calls bad color schemes “eclectic”.
