I'll see Prometheous before reviews.

I can come up with a couple dozen but it seems like a pointless exercise. Recent ones include Lorax, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Super 8, The Help, The Debt. The usually at least half a dozen a year that I disagree with critics. With you, Skelly, it's like 100% movies you disagree with critics! you are SO badass. If only someone could tame you (*dreamy eyes*)

Thinking about other films that the critics gave mixed reviews to and/or performed poorly at the box office.

Big Trouble in Little China
The Thing
Flash Gordon
Streets of Fire

John Carter is in good company. Too bad we won't get a sequel or more Kantos Kan though.

Think I'll go see it again before it leaves the theater.

The Thing got bad reviews? You mean the one from John Carpenter? That's such an awesome flick! Stupid critics :(

No, The Thing is 78% fresh on RT. Big Trouble in Little China is 82% fresh too. Critics don't dislike genre movies, just bad movies. Don't believe the hype that is being spewed here.

Edit: Flash Gordon is 82% fresh and Streets of Fire 60%. You need a new list Jeff.

RT percentages don't work on older movies, they're based on recent reviews. When these films initially hit the theaters most were shredded plus they didn't perform well.

From Wikipedia entries:

BTiLC: "After the commercial and critical failure of the film, Carpenter became very disillusioned with Hollywood and became an independent filmmaker."

The Thing: "Despite mixed contemporary reviews, the film has been reappraised substantially in the years following its release, and now maintains an 78% "Certified Fresh" rating"

Flash Gordon: "Flash Gordon had a poor box office performance, grossing only $27,107,960 worldwide."

Streets of Fire: "Streets of Fire faired poorly at the box office..." "The film received mostly negative reviews from critics when it was first released. It currently has a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes."

So, what I say is true...

That's ok, John Carter will be talked about long after 21 Jump Street and the Lorax. I imagine it'll fall into a 'revised' rating once it hits netflix and gains an audience who had no idea what it was.

This too will be a cult classic.

I watched John Carter opening weekend. It was ok. I honestly doubt I'll remember much about it in a year's time. I don't really get the resounding praise some people here are giving it. If I were to describe the movie to a person, I'd say, "It's Chronicles of Riddick given the Disney treatment." I don't think there's much else to it.

Jeff, thanks for the reply. I appreciate the info. I still believe that most critics like movies of all types. I won't say they always get it right, but my tendencies often line up with theirs. I understand that they may have a bias against action movies, but I think that is because they are often poorly made pablum. They will show respect for well-made action movies.

And let's be honest, Flash Gordon is a bad movie. I love it, but that is because I saw it first at age 10 and nostalgia blinds me. If I watched it for the first time today, I would probably be pretty disappointed in it. The Thing and BTiLC still hold up for me and I think I would enjoy them if I saw them for the first time today. That is why all critical analysis must be taken with a grain of salt. It doesn't mean there is no value in critics and their opinions.

They have a bias against Action and Horror and Sci-Fi. Mostly because those movies are often bad too tho.

I don't think anyone will be talking about John Carter, Lorax or 21 Jump Street a year from now. Maybe JC gets an effects nomination from the Academy?

A little long, but far better than any of the John Carter ones Disney bought for $100 million. Gives the story some perspective and makes it feel like a must see.

I understand it's made around $210 million world wide. Surely, the forthcoming DVD sales will make this profitable.

I want to see it again. It's an old fashoned swashbuckler. Made me feel like I was 10 years old again watching an old Errol Flynn movie. Sword fighting was less impressive then it should have been, and the leading man was less charming, but still a lot of fun. True to the spirit of the book, and I would say, improved upon it. The books are fun, but totally pulp trash. The plot is far more convoluted than the movie and the dialog is just as dopey.

I have been staying away from this thread because I hate spoilers. Well I just saw the film and now I'm going to check out the comments above. But before I do I just want to say that I am totally baffled that anyone would say this movie was bad. Awesome film. If this film is suffering because of bad reviews, that is a travesty. And anyone complicit with that travesty should be ashamed of themselves, Barney.

Your complicity in the travesty lies in letting them influence your decision to not see the film, evil man.

I'm afraid I cannot love you.
