Southernman Where art Thou?

I'm sorry not to see Southernman around. That's one thing. The second is, for what it's worth, that almost all the changes regarding the site were for the better. It was a painful transition, even for some of us users, but this site is a far better place for it. I can't remember the last time I said thanks for all the hard work done here by you guys, so thanks.

Yeah - I seem to recall Southernman being one of the first (and loudest, natch) to praise the hard work done here by all the admins and writers, but especially Ubarose.

Should we have another funding drive? WE CAN HAVE NEW COLOR BADGES!

In general, I liked Southernman here. But I never forgot his particular style of internet tough guy confrontation: "Show me your face!" Never really got that... was he going to use biometric calculations to size up potential opponents? I don't even remember who he was mad at that one time when he was trying to figure out where they could meet up for a real world fistfight.

Look Bottom line is that Southern man is a strainght shooter and a good guy. I miss him. Screw those of you who don't.

For the second time in a month, Loter has caused a topic to be split and the controversial bit dumped in the bowels of the Fortress.

We're all yelling in a closet, but sometimes we yell in a sound proof room.

With the departure of Southernman, some of the spirit of F:AT died. He always showed what level of discourse was accepted, yes, also by going beyond that sometimes.

But, and this may sound dorky, I have taken the way things are discussed here into the real world, by always being honest about things even when that appears rude or mean-spirited. I also never backed down, unless when I was in the wrong. As expected, such behavior is incredibly polarizing. It has made me some great friends but also many grave enemies who simply hate me now for who I am. That is depressing, but I don't think the world can be changed to the better when always sticking to the commonly accepted norm.

I hope we all can get over these personal quarrels and Southernman becomes an active user again.
EDIT: If he wants to.

/old frank mode on

The irony is of course Loiter is the person who claims Southernman made people leave the boards (even though I don't recall this ever happening.)

I'm just glad Southernman is still in existence. Who made the earlier reference about him "playing the harps", so to speak?

At any rate, Southernman and I rarely saw eye to eye... but that didn't mean that I thought he was a bad guy. Would like to see him back here.

Hey, where exactly IS Pat II? Would like to see him back posting here too.

(BTW, a little "settle it like men" resolution never hurt anyone, IMO but perhaps it is a bit too uncivilized for today's world)

Wow Schweig, great post. i especially like the last sentence of the above quoted paragraph. I also have become super-honest in real-life conversations in recent history and I've noticed the same polarization. It has cemented some friendships and ruined others but the people I talk to casually now have much more interesting conversations and interactions in general. it's nice not having to wear a mask in social settings anymore (if that makes sense)

That was me. This is something I’ve always wondered. We all form bonds online, but generally it is not the case that internet forum members meet regularly in real life. (Conventions don’t count). This community seems to keep in touch in the real world but still, I think it is very possible that someone could die and we would think he simply took off to pursue other interests. This bothers me. Am I alone in this or is this something other F:ATies think about too.

I wonder that sometimes but there is usually always someone that knows someone in real life so I'm sure we'll hear about it. Like I know this guy Dom in real life who would surely inform people on decktech.net if I were to pass away from a heart attack after a really intense session with Kenneth. Then imrahil (Chris), booth (idiot) or maxoftat (kiki) would come and tell people here and Barnes would do a CoD vigil for me

I think it's interesting to know that there are people on here that no one really knows in real life on a regular basis. I'd assume that like minded gamers who play in the same gaming groups would frequent the same online forums. I mean, almost everyone in my gaming circles are either on here or BGG. I assume if I kicked the bucket, someone would be able to tell everyone.

Do people having gaming friends that just don't follow the hobby online?
