SOS…SOS…
I hear words and phrases…
Meaningless, except for two:
“Mother…,” “Father…”

.
Fan speculation has been running rampant about this retheme including alleged leaks from playtesters. The teaser linked above is set to be fully announced on the 10th so we'll know soon enough!
Seems fine, they could sand off some rough edges and put in some essentials in the core box. I'd like to see the game a little bit shorter out of the box but tuned to be just as difficult on the crew.
Nope. The big success of BSG was in conveying the timely themes and topics of the show while also providing a highly interactive -BSG- experience. Slapping Cthulhu shit on it in 2021 with maybe a couple of new mechanisms is just about the laziest and least inspired way possible to bring back Corey K’s seminal design. It’s one of the most influential and important games of the last 20 years and they are going to Munchkin it up with Lovecraft...Jesus effin’. I guess it will be an “Arkham Files” game now...I’d almost rather it go to Terrinoth.
I feel like this re-theme could work so I'm optimistically hopeful but FFG's continued disregard for their best in-house universe - Android - where this could be an almost straightforward retheme is so confusing.
More interestingly than the theme/setting, I do wonder about the resonance of this title to modern audiences (assuming no mechanical changes). I feel like BSG is a game that captured a moment in time but I'm not sure I'm up for fiddling with a bunch of small decks of cards again.
Both the game and the show were specifically about post 9/11 trauma and fear.
But yeah, this could totally feature Lovecraftian themes- the sabotaging players could secretly be “cultists” (meaning “foreigners” and “mulattoes”) trying to sink a ship full of upright New England white people. Mask the racism with some hand wavy “cOsMiC HoRrOr” bullshit and fish monsters, this could be a huge hit.
Lovecraft is trash. Step back from the nerd brainwashing/indoctrination that liking Lovecraft is the Done Thing and you realize that a bunch of garbage writing with a couple of decent horror ideas shouldn’t have been enough to keep his fandom going for 100 years.
I have actually only played BSG one time. I had not seen the show at that point, and the game took 4 hours, which was at least 1 hour too long. It made me never want to play again. If this is a BSG game at its core, I hope it is streamlined.
