Barnes wins!

What's even more out of left field (at least initially) is that the issuer of the C&D is Moon Designs, the creator of the HeroQuest RPG, and as it turns out owner of the "HeroQuest" Trademark in the USA. And, since Kickstarter is a US based company...

Apparently they are in neogtiations with Gamezone now. And yes, Barnes does win. Whatever this turns out to be, if anything, it's not going to be "HeroQuest" to me.

-edit-

Oh. Apparently the original designer of HeroQuest works for Moon Designs... Hmm... Interesting.

Baker?

The designer of Heroquest the MB boardgame, or the Gloranthia rpg?

Link?

Nevermind. I misread that. Greg Stafford. He was the designer of HeroQuest RPG. I give up. Too many tentacles to follow. I should go play some Eldritch Horror. It will make more sense.

Gloranthia RPG. So Barnes only gets the push, not the win as this has fuck-all to do with the RPG in the end beyond the name and I already said that the final name will be "Hero....Quest, not to be confused with...," which is about all the Gloranthia RPG folks will likely be able to wrangle (along with their $.09 per copy licensing to go away and not cause further trouble].

I think you may be surprised. After all, didn't the original Heroquest cause Sierra to change the name of their "Hero's Quest" line to "Quest for Glory?" Without the Heroquest name, I'm not sure GameZone is pulling $500K

The original HQ was aimed at 10-12 year old kids. Who's the target demographic for Kickstarter gameboard projects? What's to say that anything such as that dumb flavour text for a KS bonus stretch goal of all things will make its way into the final board game?

Was that the result of Milton Bradley lawyers or of their own desire to not cause confusion in the marketplace with the existing HeroQuest computer game [people seem to forget that there was a line of early PC games too]? In either case, it's kind of an apples and oranges comparison to what's happening here.

Of course not. And it won't be the 25th anniversary edition of anything either.

I think it's legit. Most interesting part for me is that if everything works out we may see HQ25 in stores in the U.S. next year.

Statement from Moon Design

Looks like Barnes really does win.

I'll take a slice of that as well. Hasbro is the primary buzzkill apparently, as I expected (and asked and everyone said oh no, they're a Spanish company so they can do what they want).

The project's already been closed on that site apparently.

Also.... ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear backers,

We want to comunicate our decision of stoping the campaign were you had pledged: 'Heroquest 25th Anniversary'

The urge to publish the project by the authors today sunday 8 at 1 am has precipitated it's publication without being able, the team of verkami, to spend the right time to review the project.

After carefully studying the campaign, we believe that the content of the project could be misleading to our users.

Your pledges will be cancelled so no charges will be made in your card or PayPal account.

We thank you for your trust, and we want to apologize for any inconvenience our handling of the project might have caused.
