Overall, I think the change will be good. It will be a longer drive, on the order of 8 hours from Connecticut. Right in the sweet spot of not far enough to fly but a total drag to drive.

The big benefits will be:

No Route 30. Driving or walking, dealing with this road that may as well be an interstate highway with the speed and volume of traffic just plain sucks.

Lots of stuff to do outside of the convention. This will make the trip more attractive to my wife who would be bored senseless after two days in Lancaster.

The big Ifs are:

Will the facilities be better? They'd almost have to be, right?

The attitude of the staff regarding outside beverages. The Host is very tolerant but the new place could be far more strict. Although with better service and prices that are less than absurd I would be willing to buy in house beer.

Food? Will it be easily obtained? Have to imagine a winter resort in Summer will have plenty of local restaurants eager for customers in the slow season. Will the hotel have food that is at least not disgusting? On site food at Host is bad.

I like the idea of the chalet but I have to imagine that they are very limited in number and will be taken quickly. And I still think that there would be near zero motivation to walk to the convention hall if there were 15 cool kids staying in the chalet. We'd just game there like Sag's house rental/gaming weekends.

7 Springs would actually likely be an hour closer for me and looks like a place my wife would be happy to do a couple of days along with the spawnling.

So, is Andy still there and there through Friday or Saturday? My job reached out and absolutely fucked me inside out this week to the point where I couldn't come up at all before *maybe* Friday (totally screwing me on the non-refundable hotel room down the street. Fortunately, it was cheap for 5 days). But I'd like to get up there not least because I have a copy of Cave Evil for the Drunken Yob from Kuwait.

I guess it comes from growing up in the West, but a ski resort with a peak of less than 3000ft confuses the hell out of me.

Looks like an infinitely better place than Lancaster to take a split-interest vacation in the summer, though.

Someday I gotta drag my ass across the country for this, wherever it ends up.

Jeeze, what's with the disrespecting Lancaster? This is a vacation destination. Two theme parks one in walking distance the other one of the best in the country, outlet shopping 500 yards away, steam locomotives and a huge rail museum, Amish country and the craftsman shopping associated with it, quilting and sewing capital of the world. Horse racing and casino gambling is about 40 minutes away. Indian Echo Caverns tours. Gettysburg. Complaining about the Host is one thing, but this part of the country pulls a butt-ton of tourists each year.

What is Seven Springs bringing to the table in the off season? Presumably there's hiking, but there must other things available too.

Andy says he is here until evening Saturday so drag your sorry pony tail up here before he leaves.

Lancaster:

Amish
Hershey park
Gettysburg ( well over an hour away and of 0 interest to 99% of wives)

Seven springs:

Hiking
Mountain biking
Disc Golfing
Local wineries
No 5 mile long strip mall
Real restaurants that aren't chains
Horse back riding
Alpine slides
Paint ball

It brings an infrastructure/physical plant that isn't on the verge of collapse. This year the Host has both a portable outside AC unit ( parked outside Lampeter ) and a portable boiler unit outside the Paradise area.

Tournaments:
Maria - Won as Austria. I would have been in the finals but it conflicted with the Ti3 finals. But I played 2 other not tournament games of Maria with Repoman and either Flimflam or Cranky Dan.
Great Campaigns of American Civil War - Went 2-0 but lost in the quarter finals as my Union troops couldn't take Bullrun.
Ti3 - Won a 4player game to get in the finals. Won the fasted 8 player final ever. 4 1/2 hours for 8 players.
Washington War - lost my heat of WWr.
Stock car championship - dead last.

8 games I was Joning to play at WBC:
#8. A cranking beard scratching war game like GCoACW.
#7. Battlestar Galactica with Bernie B. Styles and company
#6. An Uba game of Talisman, Kemet, Wiz-War, etc.
#5. A big epic team game like Star Trek, Star Wars, Epic C&C ancient, 1812, Wings of War, etc
#4. A late night drunken game of Shadow Hunters, Star Wars epic duels, Life Boats, etc.
#3. A multi-player war game (Virgin Queen, Maria, Here I Stand, Angola, Repogame, etc)
#2. Ti3 not some Ti3 streamlined elegant euro wanabe version of Ti3
#1. Real Arkham Horror, not some watered down bull shit version of AH

Played everything on my list except #5 I had to choose between X- wing or playing Battlestar Galatica with Bernie, Andy, Jay, Saul and Matt so I played BSG.

I had Wings of War set up on four mats on Friday night, and Sean and I couldn't find so much as a third player to join us.

There was a group there that told us not to start without them, and then started a game of Ticket to Ride instead, so we packed up and moved on to other things.

I don't know where that was, Sag. Can't join you if I don't know when where it is. I would have totally been down. I have seen multiplayer games of X wing in the past. Usually in open gaming down by the stage. Usually in the afternoon. So such things are possible.

My highlights:

Drinking with Thirstyman and not puking. A first. And yes I drank very very little of his firewater.

The best game of Fury of Dracula ever. Me, as Drac, being located on the very first card draw and the leading the hunters on a merry chase until night fall. Immediately pouncing on Mina, sinking my fangs in and sending her to see that hag Sister Agatha at St. Joseph and Mary's. Then, as the sun came up, having the hunters swirl around me like a swarm of bees as they kept guessing wrong as to where I was (but they were so close). Finally fleeing to sea and landing in England. With the sun still up Galdaming rushing in to confront me in Liverpool. He didn't count on me having a rifle toting minion (in my mind a creepy backwater game warden) who proceeded to shoot him all to death! I hope the hunters enjoyed it but I KNOW I did.

Forcing MSample to say "hi" and shake my hand even though he was trying to sneak by.

Disc Golf with Engineer Al and Kingput. Nice little course only about 5 miles from the Host.

Playing a game of Fire in the Lake with Flimflam, Kevin, and Kev's son Ben. Ho-boy! A very very tough game to figure out what you should do and when. The quasi-alliance between the US and South Vietnam is really the big change from Andean Abyss. I'm told the game is most similar to Distant Plain but I've not played that. I can't possibly have a qualified opinion on this game after one play other than to say its deep and will make your brain hurt.

Playing some goofy "10,000 Dollar Pyramid" type game late at night with Malloc and the Dark Queen (you know the one with the accent). A little computer device provides the words, keeps score, acts as a "hot potato" as it has a timer and you don't want to be holding it when the buzzer goes off. Addictive, fun, and highly suited for the 2am crowd.

Marveling at the Zepplin Hanger sized building known as the expo center that had numerous tables, great lighting, and it's own set of bathrooms that were not covered in piss and was entirely unoccupied (seriously there were never more than 3 tables with people) while up in the horribly lit theater people fought like an over populated colony of rats for table space. I have NO idea why the Expo isn't the default open gaming area. It even has a concession booth where they could sell beer and snacks.

Other stuff but it have to go to work now.

I'm trading GenCon for WBC when it goes to Pittsburgh. It's 4 hours further, but I really do love Pittsburgh, and quite honestly, I can bring the whole family to the resort. They have fucking SPORTING CLAYS, meaning I will be spending 50% of my time doing that.
