Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Trashdome - Axis & Allies VS Starcraft: Board Game

It's only tuesday but it looks like we need to go ahead and tell the old folks home to pull the plug on A&A. Who's got the funeral arrangements?

Don't gloat Barnes. There are only 100 active users here and that is not a fair representation of the true gamers across this vast land of ours

Never played Starcraft, so I can't really vote.

However, Axis and Allies does have alot going for it. Especially the revised version.

Barnes you think you are hot shit. I think its time you are put in your place.

How would it look for Weeks to beat you at the game of your choice?

I'm coming to Dragon Con this year and if you dare be there with the game of your choice.

If I defeat the King, I become King!

I've written a song to eulogize the death of AXIS AND ALLIES. You want to hear it? It sounds a lot like "Eleanor Rigby"

Ah, look at all the heavy bombers
Ah, look at all the heavy bombers

Axis and Allies picks up the dice at the table where a game has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing Hitler’s face that he keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the heavy bombers
Where do they all come from ?
All the heavy bombers
Where do they all belong ?

Weeks the Mad Gamer writing the words of a post that no one will hear
No one comes near.
Look at him working. Saving his IPCs in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?

All the heavy bombers
Where do they all come from?
All the heavy bombers
Where do they all belong?

Axis and Allies died in the Trashdome and was buried along with its name
Nobody came
Weeks the Mad Gamer wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
Europe wasn’t saved

All the heavy bombers
Where do they all come from?
All the heavy bombers
Where do they all belong?

If Starcraft were indeed as good as you say we would see more discussion and sales, more expansions.

The sales figures of Axis and Allies do speak volumes for the legions of gamers that love it. If it is no good, why do we continue to see more and more versions of the game?

By that logic, McDonalds obviously makes some of the best burgers in the world.

I haven't played either game, but I bought Tide of Iron instead of A&A.

A&A was great when you were a kid, but it got a lot of play because it was the only option available (where I was growing up, even the rest of the GM series was mail order only but AA was available in stores) unless you wanted to move up to cardboard chits and really dense rules or back down to risk.

Starcraft may have some flaws, but it's a far more enjoyable game.

Vote: Starcraft

Is it too late?? I've got to vote for Starcraft.

I never really liked Axis and Allies, even as a kid. It just felt too scripted and I'd rather play Samurai Swords or Risk... more open ended games.

But I loved the chrome on A&A back then.. still do to some degree and I would be interested in trying the single scenario games they've put out since then.

Weeks has really old taste.

Steve... are there any new games you actually like? Any FFG games you actually like? Your vote is usually the easiest to guess. Not a bad thing per-se but I have to wonder.

I just have to bump this 'DOAM fight with some bits of why I love StarCraft.

-It's got a lot of the things that made the PC game so great, like 3 completely different sides that each have different units that can be good at taking down other specific units, plus it's got cool "spellcaster" type units with cool "spells"!

-The combat deck ROCKS. It's like a whole game of DOMINION thrown into a DOAM game, only better, because instead of buying a card that lets you draw an extra card or that is a useless VP, you get a NUKE card, or a STIM PACKS that beef up your marines, or Increased Carrier Capacity so everyone fears your floating beehive of doom. The cards have a Magic-esque feel to them, too, how they each have an attack and health value and sometimes special abilities, or some of them are enchantments/support cards that boost your main dudes.
The cards do a good job of emulating unit health/shield levels, too. Let's say you have in your hand, 2 Ultralisk cards (one with health 9 and one with health 7) and a zergling card. Your Ultralisk gets attacked and you use your health 9 card to destroy the Terran meat. You immediatley get attacked again and use your health 7 card, but your Ultralisk just barely manages to survive the battle. If you are attacked again before you get another Ultralisk card, that 'lisk is probably dead. The cards are great at representing health levels AND energy levels (for special abilities). This is why the Zerg get to draw a card after each battle; it represents their quick natural healing. The Protoss draw extra cards when they are attacked as a representation of their shields.

-You get to say stuff like "I'm about to drop the hammer and dispense some indescriminate justice!!!" and "My life for Aiur!!!" Great times.

-I made some maps for StarCraft that really make it feel more like I feel like it should. :p
Link to blog entry that was on the front page for a whole 5 minutes :p
Maybe this is because it's more of a personal touch, but I feel like it makes the 2-player game much better.

I never had any interest in Starcraft until reading this thread and the responses in Ken's recent blog about DOAM games. Now I'm dying to try it sometime. It seems like one of those games that completely flew under the radar even though I was aware of its existence since it was released.

I actually have very little A&A experience. Risk was always the game of choice when I was a kid. The Anniversary edition looks freakin awesome though and I'd love to play it sometime as well, but don't think I'd be pulling it out week after week.

SKIDOOSH! That's all she wrote, folks. A new era has dawned, change has come, and all that. Out with the old and in with the new. Not even Steve Week's stumping could save a clunky, embarssing relic like A&A. It's like your old uncle who drinks too much and then starts talking about porn at the holiday dinner table before passing out on the couch.

HAIL STARCRAFT! Now I really want to get BROOD WAR and play it soon.
