Thanks for the tip, MattDP... I picked up Titan. Now I just need time to check it out...

I've been playing Hunters 2 nonstop since its release. This game is fantastic; a really big upgrade and rebalance of the first version. Might be my favourite turn-based strategy game on the platform.

There is no possible way I can wait as long as "this summer" for this. I'm going to explode long before then. Perhaps a brief period of cryogenic storage is the answer.

I enjoyed the original hugely when it came out, but found it got very repetitive, very quick. Is this better in that regard?

Well, the base gameplay (the combat) is still nearly the same, and the meat of the game is still taking the daily contracts and fighting through them. There's a new campaign mode, although it's short at 7 missions (plus a tutorial mission). The missions themselves are pretty good. There's no word on whether there will be more scripted missions added at a later date.

Here's what I'd say the big differences are:
  • Hunters now have specific class skills they can choose from, so not all hunters have the ability to gain every skill. Plus, heavy weapon skills aren't automatically awarded; now you have to spend a skill point for each heavy weapon you want the hunter to use (and there are four in total now). In practical terms, this means goodbye to generalists; your squad will have mostly specialist troops. You'll need to develop a larger squad so you can pick and choose who to send on a contract.
  • There are several one-shot-per-contract skills you can learn, which add tactical choices.
  • When your hunters level up, you gain skills instead of power or HP. Also, weapons and armour stats are based on rarity, not level. This tends to result in a more even experience, rather than becoming uber-powerful quickly.
  • Weapons are rebalanced, and for the better. All weapons have certain situations in which they're useful now, so your squad isn't just outfitted with the same two or three weapons.
  • The maps are better designed. Some are twisty and claustrophobic, some are wide open. They play very differently.
  • There's an alien enemy now, in addition to the human enemies. They are all melee types. (One of them explodes.) Dealing with them is much different from dealing with other hunters.
  • Each contract has a limit to the number of hunters you can send, somewhere between two and six. So you're not just sending your whole team out every time; you have to make decisions at the start.
  • Besides the three difficulty levels, there's a hardcore mode now, in which if a hunter dies, he and all his equipment are gone forever. Damned if that doesn't make for some tense situations, and it really heightens the importance of your choices. I'm especially loving this. Don't think I'd ever go back to regular mode now. But if you're so inclined, the game has three save spots, so you can have different teams under different conditions.

In a nutshell, there's a lot that's the same and a fair amount that's different. It's hard for me to judge--I loved the first game, despite its limitations--but if I had to guess, I'd say that given all the changes and new options, this would hold someone's interest a lot longer. Based on some other comments I've read, this seems to be true; gamers who liked the concept of the first but got bored quickly are sticking with this version.

One new thing I've found is that I've gotten pretty attached to my squad. Although they have no character per se, the different skills and roles mean they seem to have a personality, much like the pilots in Phantom Leader. My recommendation: give it a go.

It's not all about mustering. Do not fight the way the AIs do--they bring the Titan out front waaaay too fast for my tastes. You want to bring it in for totally awesome mop up work unless you overmatching the oppt. Pay attention to points, esp when folks are close to X00 (Amgel acquisition. Sometimes you should Flee and yield 1/2 pts even if you might win, b/c full points would put them over. Try not to get stuck in the out ring.

Looks like Baldur's Gate wants to be truly cross-platform:

Impressive ... if they can pull it off.

Is there a way to combine legions after they're split?

Pete, if you're doing anything through GameCenter, be sure to add your tag to the master list:

No. The best you can do is muster an angel from one of your legions during combat.

i can safely recommend Farm Frenzy 2 HD to anyone here. I love it myself and have been shy to recommend it in case it's just my weird taste but I recommended it to a buddy of mine who loves AT games and he's eating it up. It's a strategy game and I love it. He plays on iPad and i play on WP7

I've played it; it's fun. A lot of the casual games are, really.
