Well, very much in Space Hulk fashion GW is planning another stand alone game - This time naval based. There's quite a few rumors surrounding it and they seem to be fairly solid.

GW has been posting "Wanted Posters" showing people in captain's hats. The rumors I've heard is that it will be a complete game, with approx six to eight races represented (though I have heard it might also just be two). People are saying 10mm scale (so that is Warmaster scale) which to me seems odd since the boats they released for Warmaster through Forge World were like 5" or 6" long.

At the bottom of a GW Blog Post you can see that a lot more will be revealed Sept 17th.

GW Blog

Supposed to be priced at $150.00 - Take that FFG and your measly $100 price tags!

That would make perfect sense. If it sells, you can bet your butt there will be expansions.

Not Man o' War is what I've been reading. I want this to be great, so badly, and I'll gladly shell out 150$ if it is as good as Man o' War was. Fuck, even unpainted.

Few other things - The name isn't Dread Fleet, but that is what the internet groups have dubbed it. Solid info is of course not really existent and guesses are abound.

Here's where I've been following (though I'll admit not closely since so little can be verified):

Bell of Lost Souls

DakkaDakka

The Bell of Lost Souls post is pretty interesting.

Pros:
Complete game, so may get played more than uncharted seas (looks longingly at Orc fleet in the corner).
Might no longer be tempted to try and pick up Man' o War odds and ends for crazy prices on eBay.

Cons:
Looks like it is only 2 player.
Races other than humies and Vamps are also-rans with a single ship or no ships at all.

I'm curious about the scale, but for slightly more than $150, I can pick up the Spartan Games Dystopian Wars naval set with 4 complete fleets, and those ships look freaking beautiful.

I'd rather see a revised edition of Warhammer Quest personally.

Hmmm, I think this is interesting. I might shell out the cash for it. Man O War was the best, but who knows about this design?

I feel like one the reasons people were willing to pay for the fancy Space Hulk design is that it was a proven design with real lineage. It will be interesting to see if a new design can get as much support without the automatic buy in.

. . . and the theme is much more to my tastes. Fleets of vampires just looks retarded. Games Workshop is the antithesis of my taste in themes. They always have some freak-ass races that just leave me cold as a stone.

I've been holding off on buying Dystopian Wars because I don't have an opponent on board yet. I've heard the rules aren't stunning too. But rules can be revised. The ships look excellent and the theme is right in my (ahem) wheelhouse. Buying Blazing Sun (the one I'm interested in) would likely mean I'd find it easier to get opponents too.

Are they making this a "super special pre-order because we are making a limited amount"deal? I'm sure that helped sway fence sitters and boosted sales on Space Hulk, but even now you can pick it up for pretty close to retail (even eBay doesn't look too extreme).

?????

Their boats sit dead in the water on sunny days, or does the crew wear really big hats?

I think GW Vampires sparkle in the daylight.

One thing I'm worried about is the game using their new Fine Cast garbage. There's been polls online and 50% of people aren't happy with it. Once primed it looks the exact same as metal, but costs about 50% more.

Still though...I'll likely get it. I'm a MoW junkie who has 1000+ points for every fleet (and expanding). So this will likely cause a dent in my wallet.

I'm pretty sure they'll be plastic ships. GW only seem to be using Finecast for their miniatures that used to be cast in metal, all the new stuff has been plastic.

Having said that, I think Finecast is way better than metal (other than the increased cost).

I'm really looking forward to this new naval game. If it sells well I'm hoping it'll mark a proper return for Games Workshop to hobby games other than Warhammer (not that I've got anything against Warhammer, but it'd be nice to see them bringing out a variety of stuff. They may be uber expensive, but no one does components better than Games Workshop).
