It was a fun Civ-lite, and though I've never played the original Civ, it seems like it falls into the same bracket as TI3. The ancient civilization theme is cool, but for me it doesn't come close to TI3's space empire building theme.

You can play the game plus expansion in around 3 hours. Civilization is twice that, minimum.

Fine, haven't played either... I've always loved the Civ computer games but when it comes to board games I've really been wanting to play MN for a long time, Civ is one that I'd play if it was offered but I'd never make a big effort to.

I played Civilization once recently at a local con and quite enjoyed it. We were 3 players and we set the game end condition early (first one to the bronze age, I think, or stone age or whatever). It was a very fun and surprisingly accessible and engaging 3 hour game. The problem is that few people I know will want to play the game. When I walked around the convention room holding the Civilization box lid and tried to recruit another player, people thought I was absolutly off my rocker. Nobody wanted to play a game with such a rep for being a marathon. Mare Nostrum (I'm playing my first game this weekend) is much much more popular with my group. There are lots of folks around who would play it. I skimmed the rules and the game sounds awesome, so that's my vote. I'll never turn down a game of Civ though.

At first it looked like Civilization was going to walk away with this win easily, but Mare Nostrum got a lot of votes in the second half. In other news, Mare Nostrum fans are rioting outside the home of Aarontu for changing his vote since if he'd stuck with MN it would have won instead.
