Time of Heroes , a new 3D turn-based strategy game, is having a release sale for $0.99, ending soon. It looks good, but I haven't played it yet, since I'm still totally addicted to Starters Orders 4 , that horse racing management sim I mentioned in the iPad thread. I can't stop playing this thing.

Can someone recommend me a good DOAM/civ game for iOS? Doesn't have to be a board game conversion. I know there are a couple of good conversions like Titan and Imperial that came up recently but ideally I'd like something that either can't be played by email elsewhere or finished in a couple of hours. Something more epic.

Haven't played World in War. I like the Battle for Wesnoth. multiple scenarios of different lentghs with different troop types.

Bullwinkle, I have Time of Heroes...haven't played it much. It's strangely opaque and the graphics are very ugly. I like Smuttlewerk's other game, Companions, quite a lot though. It's sort of an RTS/RPG Hybrid.

Oddly, the best DoaM I've played on IOS is probably Quarrel. Yep. The word game. Most IOS DoaMs are kind of crap, but there are some good SPRGs if you want to go tactical

I can't believe more people here aren't playing Ravenmark. It's as close to IOS WHFB as we'll likely get. Really wish it had multiplayer though.

Battle of Wesnoth is soooooo tedious.

Yeah, I want to like Wesnoth ... but it's just not happening. Each scenario is at least 33 percent longer than it should be. The cumulative effect is total fatigue/burnout.

I'd recommend UniWar for a Things On A Map game. It's certainly not Civ-like, but it's got a really neat campaign, variable powers, etc. iPhone only for now, although the HD version is due to hit very soon.

I've tried to like it both on PC and IOS. But it is unbelievably boring, and you're right- the scenarios just drag on across maps that are too big and with tedious mechanics.

I have not heard of this Ravenmark. I'll have to check it out.

Hmm. I played Qwirkle and didn't like it at all. It's slow paced and has no strategy other than word construction. And I was able to kick the crap out of the AI the whole time.

I've got Ascendency but couldn't be bothered to learn the system. The fact there was no tutorial and hardly anything in the way of documentation didn't help. Yeah I know it's lazy but I found nothing to encourage me - after just an hour with King of Dragon Pass I read the rulebook from cover to cover.

I'll have to check out Uniwar and Ravenmark. The former is cheap and happy to buy low res version as I'm likely going to get a crappy old 3GS iPhone in a couple of weeks when my current contract expires (I'd like a 4, of course, but 3GS is half the price). The comment about the latter being like WFB makes me think of Dark Omens and man, Dark Omesn was such a fantastic game. I'd love to see that on iOS!

I've got palm heroes 2 but never played it. Also have Starbase Orion and Civilization Revolution on my wish list. Perhaps I should check them out - anyone played them? But further suggestions welcome.

MattDP- I played Ascendancy back on PC years ago. The only thing that dragged me away from it was Daggerfall!

I am loving Ascendancy on the iPad, but I already knew how to play. Once you get past the learning curve, it will gladly give you that 'just one more turn' feeling.

I played the hell out of UniWar on my old 3G. It played great and looked just fine; I think you'll be happy if you drop a couple of bucks on it.
