Thanks for the pointer to The Longest Johns, Shellhead. That’s perfect. I have the same plan for a Halloween game: I’m gathering friends for a good session of rum, sodomy, and the lash with Sea Evil. Their Between Wind and Water album will be part of our soundtrack.
Isn't there a bunch of the Assassin's Creed:Black Flag sea shanties out in an album or something? IIRC they had some music accompaniment but I remember lots of sailing around in circles just to appreciate them. Definitely added a lot to the atmosphere of the game.
The Jolly Rogers is one of the best groups putting out shanties and performing older ones. They have one of the best covers of Green Fields of France as well.
I always get chills when I hear their rendition of Royal Oak.
Caught Phoenix, Cut Copy, and Porches together a couple days ago. Really strong live performances, all of them. My girlfriend got to pat Thomas Mars on the back when he came out into the crowd to thank everyone near the end of the show, and she'll probably never wash her hand again.
Took my wife to see Iron Maiden last night. She's a big fan. I'm ambivalent. Really great musicianship. If you're a hardcore fan, it's probably the greatest thing ever.
I like Maiden, but selectively. They are the metal jam-band equivalent. It almost feels like there should be an Iron Phish mash up band in our timeline somewhere.
Saw Billy Bragg the other night. Despite being a filthy commie I never got super hard into him but was familiar with his stuff enough to go see. He was an absolute delight. Extremely political and socially active, and spoke a lot between songs, but it wasn't generally didactic and, most of all, it wasn't cynical anger but hopeful and positive. And funny as hell (he has a song about the true story of a bunch of Libertarians who took over a town in New Hampshire and discovered that there are reasons people pay taxes and keeping bears away is one of them).
Opening for Billy was Alice Phoebe Lou, who I didn't know. Powerful voice and some great songs. I spent the next morning listening to her on Spotify and the person I went with ordered an album.
Been high on Chubby and the Gang. They've been described as hardcore kids playing pub rock, and that's pretty apt. Their stuff is great though and really gets me wanting to move.
They do the occasional ballad which wind up sounding a lot like early Billy Bragg.
Anyway, easily my favorite new punk act since Giuda or Mean Jeans.
On the complete other end of the spectrum, I'm digging Charley Crockett's deluge of output. I think he's done like 11 albums in 7 years or something crazy. Anyway, it's _old_ school western soul. Some feel it's a bit too kitchy or an act, but I dunno. The music sounds good to me.
