Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Trashdome - Arkham Horror VS Dune

Ah man this Trashdome breaks my heart. I love both of these games. Dune is definitely the more groundbreaking design and is the finest melding of theme and gameplay ever published. (Yes even better than BSG) On the other hand, Arkham Horror is the best co-op adventure game ever. Throw in the expansions and Arkham Horror turns into a fully customizable adventure game system that can suit any groups tastes/skill level. In the end my tie-breaker is which game I can get on the table more often and that game by far is Arkham Horror.

vote: Arkham Horror

A vote for Dune is a vote for Death Comittees running a socialist health care system.

Vote Arkham Horror

Seriously, I cannot find a copy of Dune, nor am I likely to find six players willing to play this. I'm never at a loss for people wanting to play Arkham, and everyone I've played it with has enjoyed the experience.

Dune sucks because of its theme.

Arkham Horror sucks because it's cooperative.

I guess a re-themed version of Dune could totally kick ass. It should be about securing oil in the Mid-East. The players could be Iran, Iraq, Israel, USA, Saudi Arabia and China. Dune isn't more than a parable on the oil conflict anyways.

Vote: (Re-themed) Dune.

I own Dune but unfortunately have yet to get enough opponents to get a game going, that is a statement about the lack of AT-orientated boardgamers (actually, any boardgamers) where I live.

We should play it at our UK F:ATies meet-up.

Sandworms eating Iraqui tanks will be totally kickass!

Yesterdays game of Dune was great! No alliances made, Family Atomics blew Shield Wall just before the storm anihilated the Bene Gesserit from Carthago a Atreides from Arrakeen. Fremen riding worms to take over two strongholds only to be massacred by a huge Sardaukar force. I love this game. There were three people who never played before and grasped the game very easily within two turns. And they all had fun, this game needs a reprint badly.

Arkham voters use Brownshirt tactics. Arkham voters are un-American. Any vote for Arkham Horror is clearly motivated by racism.

Herbert's DUNE is about much more than the endless struggle over resources.

DUNE, the game, will still inspire players & designers long after Arkham Horror is forgotten. Playing against a crude and random paper AI is built-in STALE.

Dune sets up a rich, volatile balance of power between *human* intelligences. It's a radical design - not afraid to let the game slide into strange situations of the player's own making. It's six games in one. It's scripted in premise but wide open in play. There is nothing else like it, except possibly Chaos in the Old World, a little.

Vote: Dune

Therefore, VOTE: DUNE

But that stuff is supposed to happen when you experience Arkham Horror. Kind of goes along with the mythos theme and everything.

A bit of madness is to be expected.

Whoooo, I'm tempted to change my vote now, that would be much better. But no. Arkham kicks it's ass. If it was original Arkham against Dune then Dune would have a chance but FFG's Arkham against Dune.... not a chance.

Man, this is a hard one. ARKHAM HORROR is so awesome--in fact, thinking about this, it's my favorite game. Absolute favorite. If someone comes over and we're going to play something, I always hope it's ARKHAM HORROR.

But DUNE is the best AT game ever. The marriage of theme and game is unequaled. The way the game sort of grows is so perfect, the whole experience is almost transcendent. This is my CHESS, GO, or even MAGIC:THE GATHERING--it's a game that takes on a whole new level in my consciousness. It almost doesn't feel like a game.

Vote: DUNE.

Tom, what is it going to take to convince you to change your vote? Seriously man, you're breaking my heart.

Is that an overture for the next nexus ;-p

Psst! Tom, wrong Barnes. Believe it or not the Michael Barnes in our game lives here in Vancouver.

Are you telling me someone else is stupid brave enough to use the name Michael Barnes in the realms of boardgaming - how much fun does he have over at BGG ;-)

And here I was thinking I was going to be able to pull some great treacherous moves across Mr Barnes senior .... BAH !

I've just issued a request in my gaming group to have Aaron Tubb PERMANENTLY BANNED based on his voting record here.

After the shameful "Muppetgate" vote fraud that turned last week's TALISMAN vs. RUNEBOUND into a shambles, I wouldn't be surprised if there were some under-the-table shenanigans going on that are influencing the vote here. If you have been approached by Richard Launius and/or Kevin Wilson regarding your vote in this Trashdome, it's time to come clean. I'll tell you straight away that Launius is a very nice man and probably won't break your kneecaps with an Atlanta Thrashers hockey stick and that "personalized ANDROID character card" that Wilson may be promising you as part of that game's expansion will likely never happen as the game sold only around thirty seven copies.

I call on you, my fellow "Trads", to blow the whistle on any kind of flim-flam you might see or hear going on. We will be auditing the F:AT mailboxes to see if there is any impropriety and those involved in any kind of vote fraud will be dealt with. Normally, we would have sent Southernman but apparently his time at Notahandle's compound has left him brainwashed.

DUNE must prevail. This is darkest time ever in the history of the modern AT movement. It's worse than when TOMB was released.

Dune, no question. Dune blew my mind when I first encountered it circa 1979. I was utterly hooked by the intensity of the gameplay, but the most important thing it did for me was demonstrate the potential of the boardgame medium itself. One of the most influential games of all time, I'd wager, and certainly a Founding Father of Ameritrash.

Sadly, Arkham Horror never did much for me back in the day, and it still doesn't do much for me.

Annoucement: Ready for the Christmas rush, a new Arkham Horror investigator card will be available for free download on the FFG site - get your own Southernman investigator, starting possessions include an electric cattleprod (fully refurbished after all the Weeks episodes), multiple 6-packs of speights beer (great as offensive explosive devices when shaken and thrown), a well used rugby ball, and the trusty farm dog.
