This year has been doing well for really original movies, and this one is no exception.
Since you probably haven't heard of it, it's the story of the evolving relationship between a couple of foreign scientists and the last surviving shaman of an Amazonian tribe. As you can imagine, the visuals of this film alone are worth the price of admission.
If you're a fan of Star Trek at all, you'll be familiar with the prime directive and there are a couple of choice moments here that will raise alarm bells for you on principle. It won't take you out of the movie though. Instead of a starship, it's a wobbly canoe-like leaking boat. Other than that, similar.
Nothing bad to say about the performances, they are some commanding actors in this one.
I was just joking about 2001: A Space Odyssey earlier today and there's a sequence in this that will remind you of that. Weird that a black and white film in the Amazon with subtitles has already reminded me of two science fiction franchises. Maybe a little Apocalypse Now and Rabbit-Proof Fence as well. This film says a lot about civilization, old and new.
Really special.
